It is with great sadness that we mourn the passing of Prof. Robin Wood, Professor Emeritus and Senior Scholar in the Graduate Program in Film. We express our condolences to Prof. Wood's family, especially his partner, Richard Lippe.

Summer Institute in Film launches with lectures by film theorist Dudley Andrew

York University’s Department of Film launches its inaugural Summer Institute in Film today. The three–week intensive program, which runs to June 12, features four public lectures, June 8 to 11, by eminent film theorist Dudley Andrew, R. Selden Rose Professor of Film & Comparative Literature and director of graduate studies in the Film Studies Program at Yale University.

The Finish Line – Fiction, Alternative & Documentary Film Screenings

York MFA Thesis Film by Franci Duran premieres at Hot Docs Festival

Mr. Edison's Ear, Francisca Duran's MFA thesis film, has been selected for the Hot Docs festival in Toronto. It received its World premiere on Tues 22 April, and will be screening again on Friday 25 April at the Innis Town Hall theatre at 1:30pm.
Hot Docs Canadian spotlight programmer Gisèle Gordon described the film as, "An inventive exploration of the visceral nature of sound and how we learned to capture and reproduce it over time. Anchored by the discovery of the phonograph by the brilliant–and deaf–inventor Thomas Edison, this visual and conceptual collage of rich archival footage and animation playfully traces the birth of technological reproduction and the beginnings of our modern, audio–drenched world."
York film professor subject of CFI retrospective

York film Professor Philip Hoffman is the subject of a five–part retrospective by the Canadian Film Institute (CFI) in Ottawa, titled "Rivers of Time: A Retrospective of the Films of Philip Hoffman."

York Shorts showcases six grad-student films from past decade

York University's Film Department showcases the diversity, originality and excellence of works by rising filmmakers in its graduate program with York Shorts, a screening of six thesis productions created over the past decade, to be screened Thursday March 20, 2008, in the Nick Mirkopoulos Screening Room, 004 Accolade East Bldg., as part of the third annual York Fine Arts Festival.

International film and conference series focuses on Japan

York's Department of Film is presenting an international conference and film series titled Cinema/Movement that looks at the vibrant and controversial interaction between political action and experimental filmmaking in Japan during the 1960s and 1970s.
Cinema/Movement, organized in part by Professor Sharon Hayashi of York's Department of Film, runs through Nov. 19 at York University and the University of Toronto and features a number of speakers and films. The conference portion will be held Nov. 15 and 16.

Film students win GFADs

Two first–year FIlm MFA graduate students, Zoe Laband (Screenwriting) and Jennifer Dysart (Production), have been selected to receive the prestigious GFAD (Graduate Fellowship for Academic Distinction), given out to "incoming students with a high potential for future leadership in international affairs." Only 3 GFAD awards are given out at the Masters level, out of 48 Masters programs at York. Congratulations Zoe and Jennifer!
York MFA Film Grad Scott Puccio screens thesis film at New York Film Festival's Views from the Avant–Garde

Scott Puccio, a recent graduate of York's Graduate Program in Film MFA Production program, had his thesis film, The Film of a Thousand and One Nights and a Night (Vol. 2), selected for Views from the Avant–Garde (6–7 October 2007), part of the New York Film Festival.

York film Professor John Greyson wins Bell Award in Video Art

John Greyson, professor of film in York's Faculty of Fine Arts, is the winner of the 2007 Bell Award in Video Art. The announcement was made on Oct. 9 by the Canada Council for the Arts.
