Applications to the Graduate Program in Linguistics and Applied Linguistics must be completed online. Please click the box to the right to access the online application and application checklist.

PhD Admission Requirements

Applicants to the program require:

  • Masters-level degree in linguistics (or equivalent) with a minimum B+ average
  • Statment of Intent *
  • Resume or CV
  • Course Listing **
  • 3 letters of Recommendation from university faculty who are qualified to comment on the suitability of the applicant for doctoral-level work
  • Sample of written work (maximum 1,500 words) optional

* A statement of up to 500 words (2 pages) outlining your research interests and proposed program of study. 

Please note:  The supervisory process does not take place during the application process but rather once an applicant starts the program. PhD applicants are asked to review our faculty information to ensure that there are members with similar interests as theirs and to make suggestions as to who they would like to work with. This information can be included with the statement of intent.

** A listing of your linguistics and applied linguistics related courses with a brief course description.

PhD Applicants who have studied at a university where English is not the official main language of instruction must, with their application, produce proof of an English Equivalency score:

TOEFL

  • Paper-based: 600
  • Computer-based: 250
  • iBT: 100

IELTS

  • Overall Band Score: 7.5

YELT

  • York English Language Test
  • Band 1

* A statement of up to 500 words (2 pages) indicating your primary area of interest in the Linguistics or Applied Linguistics Field and what you plan to do after completion of the program.

** A listing of your linguistics and applied linguistics related courses with a brief course description.

*** (Applied Field Only) A detailed chronological listing of what paid teaching positions have been held outlining the name, nature and location of the institution, the length of the position in years and months, average number of hours per week, the subjects taught, level of students and average number of students per class.

MA Applicants to either field (Linguistics or Applied Linguistics) who have studied at a university where English is not the official main language of instruction must, with their application, produce proof of an English Equivalency score:
