About Graduate Mathematics & Statistics Program
The 2010-2011 Graduate Mini-Calendar describes the several programs our department offers, giving entrance and degree requirements for each. It also describes the research interests of the faculty members associated with the Graduate program in Mathematics and Statistics, provides information about financial support available to graduate students and gives a description of the courses to be offered in the Fall/Winter 2010-2011.
Regular MA program
This program is suitable for those students who want to undertake graduate study in mathematics or statistics. To be admitted, students normally must hold an honours degree in mathematics or statistics. Students with an honours degree in other mathematics-intensive disciplines (e.g. Computer Science, Science, Economics) and who have a broad knowledge of mathematics or statistics are also considered. MA program for Teachers
This program is designed to upgrade the breadth of knowledge of high school mathematics teachers, thus making them more effective in their classrooms. As such it is more course-intensive than our Regular program. The courses in this program are clearly distinguished from those in the Regular program. They aim at developing mathematical insight in general by, among other things, examining the significance of various areas of mathematics relative to one another. Another important component of the instruction in the Teachers program is the development in the student of a historical perspective on the growth of mathematical ideas. This is a terminal program, and it does not aim at preparing students for PhD level study in mathematics or statistics at York. Students will normally enroll in it on a part-time basis. Read more
MSc in Applied and Industrial Mathematics
The MSc in Industrial and Applied Mathematics has been designed as a two-year program. Students are required to take a certain set of core courses and the practicum. In the practicum, students will model physical problems that involve interpretations of experimental data, mathematical formulation of problems, analyses of the mathematical problems, and interpretations of the results. The program will culminate in a thesis. Read more
Graduate Diploma in Finanical Engineering
The Financial Engineering program at York is designed to provide the relevant training in finance, mathematics, and computer science which is necessary to understand, design and value new financial instruments: for example, the various types of derivative securities which are prevalent in modern financial markets.
It is set up as a diploma program. This means that the student completes either the regular MA degree in Mathematics and Statistics, and in addition completes a set of Financial Engineering Core Courses plus an Internship or a Research Paper. With the completion of the core courses and the internship/research paper, the student will be awarded a separate Diploma in Financial Engineering in addition to their regular Master's Degree. Graduate Diploma in Mathematics Education - Degree Concurrent
This degree concurrent diploma allows students to specialize formally in the area of Mathematics Education. For those students who successfully complete both the graduate diploma and the masters degree for which they are registered, the diploma is noted on the student’s transcript and awarded at the convocation at which the degree is awarded or at the subsequent convocation. PhD program
Students in the PhD program take advanced level course work and write a dissertation (thesis) containing original research results. Members of the program have expertise in a wide variety of areas in mathematics, statistics and related disciplines. A detailed listing of the faculty and their fields of interest appears below.
To be admitted as a PhD student, an applicant must have a Master's degree in mathematics or statistics or must have completed at least one year of comparable studies. Read more
