How to Apply


Admission Information

Go to:  http://futurestudents.yorku.ca/graduate, Click “Apply Now”  on that page to be brought to the application.  York U uses an online application, which takes about 30 minutes to complete in total.

To apply, submit an online application form, the online Supplementary form, and all supporting documentation by February 1, 2012.  For the MA  programme, please submit with the online application, a resume/CV, a statement of Interest  (500 words), a 5000 word paper or two shorter papers. For the PhD programme, please submit a resume/CV, statement of interest (500 words), a major paper or chapter of an MA thesis, to the Graduate Admissions Office.

Test of English as a Foreign Language TOEFL, IELTS or YELT, scores are required from international applicants whose higher education has not been in English.

The deadline for both internal and external applicants is February 1 , 2012. 

The program admits students only once per year, to begin September 1.

Master of Arts Program

  • BA Honours degree in philosophy, or its equivalent

  • At least a B+ average in the last two years of study.

  • It is recommended that students applying to the program have studied some logic and have some background in the history of philosophy.

Doctor of Philosophy Program

Graduates with a Master's Degree in Philosophy with at least a B+ average may be admitted as candidates
(PhD I) for the PhD degree.

Internal MA Applicants applying to the PhD programme

Students that are completing an MA degree in Philosophy and would like to apply to the PhD programme in Philosophy do not need to apply online. Students must bring a Statement of interest  (500 words) addressed to the Graduate Programme Director, a writing sample of 5000 words, the Supplementary Information Form (link will be sent to you by email), 3 letters of recommendation, a CV resume. (Transcripts will be downloaded from the Programme office)
