How to Apply


Admission Information:

Click “Apply Now”  on the right hand side of this page to be brought to the application. York University

uses an online application, which may take about 30 minutes to complete in total.


Application Requirements:

To apply for graduate studies at York University, you must complete/submit the following:

  • Application for Graduate Admission: Deadline for MA/PhD Philosophy is February  13, 2013

  • Application fee (to accompany online Application for Graduate Admission)
    The application fee is $100 Cdn, payable by Visa or MasterCard.
  • If you do not wish to submit your credit card online, or if you do not have a
  • Visa or MasterCard, please contact York's Office of Admissions at 416–736–5000.
  • Your application will be processed upon receipt of your fee payment.

The application fee is non-refundable.


  • Supplementary Information Form

  • Three letters of recommendation

  • Two copies of all official transcripts (in sealed envelopes from the issuing institutions).

To be considered for the Graduate Program in Philosophy, your application should also include:

  • Statement of Interest: a letter (500 words) addressed to the Program Admissions Committee, outlining your background in Philosophy, your reasons for wanting to pursue an advanced degree, and how you feel you might be able to best meet the degree requirements.

  • Curriculum Vitae outlining your work experience, academic background, publications, awards, etc.

  • Writing sample – an academic paper of no more than 5000 words, or a chapter from a Master’s/Honours thesis.

The deadline for both internal and external applicants is February 13, 2013. 

The program admits students only once per year, to begin September 1.

Master of Arts Program

  • BA Honours degree in philosophy, or its equivalent

  • At least a B+ average in the last two years of study.

  • It is recommended that students applying to the program have studied some logic and have some background in the history of philosophy.


Doctor of Philosophy Program

Graduates with a Master's Degree in Philosophy,  while B+ is the minimum GPA  average to be eligible for admission to the programme, successful  applicants normally have a GPA of at least an A-.



Internal MA Applicants applying to the PhD programme

Students that are completing an MA degree in Philosophy and would like to apply to the PhD programme in Philosophy will also need to apply online, and pay a fee of $100.00.

Transcripts from any previous institutions: 2 official transcripts will need to be mailed to the Graduate Admissions office (See address above).

York Transcripts will be downloaded by the Admissions office, you do not need to order York official transcripts to be sent to the Admissions office.

The Supplementary Information Form link will be emailed to you soon after the application has been submitted online, this form will request 3 referees, your referees will be emailed a link to upload their reference letter to support your Admission application.

Students must bring a Statement of Interest  (500 words) addressed to the Graduate Programme Director, a writing sample of 5000 words, and a CV (resume), to the programme office, S429 Ross.

TOEFL, IELTS OR YELT

Test of English as a Foreign Language TOEFL, IELTS or YELT, scores are required from international applicants whose higher education has not been in English.
