Teaching experience is essential for developing skills as an educator and gaining future employment in the field. York’s MA/PhD program in Theatre Studies offers a number of teaching opportunities for graduate students in our undergraduate theatre courses. In addition, we offer several intensive training sessions for new and continuing instructors, and faculty members mentor graduate student teachers throughout the year.
PhD students in Theatre Studies are normally guaranteed teaching positions as part of their funding packages. MA students are also offered teaching assistantships if there are positions available. If we are not able to assign you a teaching position, you will be offered a research position working with one of our faculty members. See ‘financial support’ section for more information on research and graduate assistantships.
There are also a number of opportunities for MA and PhD students to teach in other departments on campus.
Teaching positions are routinely available in the following Department of Theatre courses:
THEA 1500 6.0 Aspects of Theatre
THEA 1200 6.0 Origins of Theatre
THEA 2200 6.0 Theatrical Worlds in Transition
THEA 2050 3.0 Introduction to Devised Theatre
THEA 2210 3.0 The Idea of Theatre
THEA 3200 3.0 Modern Theatre and Society
Students who have completed comprehensive exams have the opportunity to design and propose an advanced undergraduate course in the study of theatre and performance to be considered for offer as part of the following year’s undergraduate curriculum. Typically, one to two PhD students each year are chosen to be independent Course Directors, teaching in their area of research specialization.
