Nancy Viva DavisHalifax has been awarded $5,000 from the Canadian Centre on Disability Studies Small Grants Program for her project entitled "Women's stories: Aging, disability and homelessness."

November 2011

Researchers from The University of Queensland, Charles Sturt University along with York University’s Regina Schuller have obtained $310,000 over 3 years from the Australian Research Council for their Discovery Project entitled “Rape victims on trial: understanding police officers' and jurors' beliefs about sexual assault, victims, and perpetrators."

Michael Connor was recently awarded the Muscle Health Research Centre Faculty Research Award for his application entitled "Effect of Electrical Stimulation on Rhabdomyosarcoma cell cycle regulation." This award is worth $2850.

Christine Till has been awarded $104,995 over three years from the Scottish Rite Charitable Foundation, for her project entitled “Structural and functional neuroimaging correlates of cognitive impairment in childhood-onset multiple sclerosis.”

September 2011

Jessica Fraser-Thomas and Parissa Safai along with their collaborator, Peter Donnelly from U ot T, will receive $109,870 over the next three years for their SSHRC-Sport Canada Research project entitled "Trickle down effect? Exploring the influence of the Olympic Games on preschooler development and sport participation."

Mary Fox and a team of researchers for York and Ryerson University and decision-making partners from community hospital and the LHINs have obtained $200,000 from the Nursing Secretariat at the Ontario Ministry of Health & Long-Term Care to conduct a 3 year provincial wide study entitled "Nurse and organizational readiness to deliver best elder care: the key to Ontario’s ability to design and implement Senior Friendly Hospital plans."

Christine Jonas-Simpson has received $36,855 from SSHRC for her Standard Research Grant entitled " Children who grieve and mourn an infant sibling: Building knowledge for bereavement education."

Regina Schuller is Co-Invesitgator on a successful SSHRC Standard Research Grant proposal titled "Confidence in the Canadian Criminal Justice System: Wrongful conviction and forms of redress." Led by Kimberley Clow from the University of Ontario Institute of Technology, the grant is worth $80,950 over three years.

Thomas Teo has received $61,750 over three years from SSHRC for his Standard Research Grant entitled "History and theory of psychological explanations: An international perspective."

Jonathan Weiss has been awarded $10,000 from the Special Olympics for his research grant entitled "Youth experiences in Special Olympics using Photovoice: Athlete, Parent, and Coach Perspectives."

Michael Riddell and his co-PI, Mladen Vranic from the University of Toronto, have received $160,000 from CIHR for their project titled, "Pharmaceutical intervention to decrease the threat of hypoglycemia in insulin-treated diabetics."

Yvonne Bohr received a CIHR Meeting, Planning and Dissemination Grant in Reproductive and Child Health for her project titled, "The Parenting Partnership: Planning an Impact Evaluation." Co-investigators from Health include Lesley Beagrie, Jennifer Connolly, Michaela Hynie, Alison Macpherson, Deb Pepler, Jennine Rawana, Hala Tamim and Maggie Toplak

David Hood was successful in obtaining a CIHR operating grant. His project titled “Autophagy in skeletal muscle” has been awarded $521,289 over five years.

James Elder has received $25,000 from NSERC for his Engage Grant entitled "An Expert System for the Home Improvement Market Using Computer Vision: Feasibility Study."

Jennine Rawana has been awarded $19,074 from the Family and Children's Services of the Waterloo Region for her Research Contract entitled "Strength based academic engagement measure: A systematic literature review."

Rose Steele is Co-Principal Investigator on a successful CIHR Operating Grant proposal titled "Best Practices Parent/Provider Interactions in Pediatrics." Led by Elizabeth Davies from the University of Victoria, the grant is worth $404,743 over three years.

Rose Steele is Co-Investigator on a successful CIHR Network Catalyst proposal titled "PedPalASCNet: A Network for Accessible, Sustainable, and Collaborative Research in Pediatric Palliative Care." Led by Harold Siden from the University of British Columbia, the grant is worth $375,328 over three years.

Paul Ritvo has received $80,000 from MITACS Accelerate Program for his project entitled "Healthy Student Initiative."

Lauren Sergio's has received funding from the Neurotrauma Foundation for her project entitled "Effects of concussion on visuomotor coordination in sport: reinjury potential assessment tool development."

Olivier Birot has been awarded $120,000 over five years from NSERC for his Discovery Grant entitled "Murine double minute-w signaling pathway regulates exercise-induced angiogenisis in rodent skeletal muscle."

Rolando Ceddia has been awarded $200,000 over five years from NSERC for his Discovery Grant entitled "Regulation of whole-body energy homeostatsis."

Jennifer Connolly has received funding from the Department of Justice Canada's National Victims of Crime Awareness Week: Research Grant for her project entitled "Public Lecture and Workshop: A grief like no other; surviving the violent death of someone you love."

Doug Crawford has been awarded $550,000 over five years from NSERC for his Discovery Grant entitled "Cortical Mechanisms for Trans-Saccadiac Integration and memory in the human."

Doug Crawford has been awarded $96,305 from NSERC for his Research Tools and Instruments (RTI) Grant entitled "MRI- guided navigation system for TMS."

Vinod Goel has been awarded $200,000 over five years from NSERC for his Discovery Grant entitled "Neural basis of reasoning."

David Hood has been awarded $54,400 from NSERC for his Research Tools and Instruments (RTI) Grant entitled "Gel Imaging System."

David Hood has been awarded $550,000 over five years from NSERC for his Discovery Grant entitled " Mitochondrial biogenesis in skeletal muscle."

Anne Moore has been awarded $95,000 over five years from NSERC for her Discovery Grant entitled "Reducing risk of work related musculoskeletal disorders through optimizing workplace design."

Richard Murray has been awarded $120,000 over five years from NSERC for his Discovery Grant entitled "Statisticalproperties of natural 3D scences and their role in visual perception."

Rebecca Pillai Riddell was selected as the winner of the 2011 Youth Early Career Award for APA Division 54 Society of Pediatric Psychology

Alberta Pos received the 2011 New Researcher Award from SEPI (the Society for the Exploration of Psychotherapy Integration). The award was based on both Alberta's body of scholary work as well as her JCCP paper, Testing a Modle of Change in the Experiential Treatment of Depression, which, according to the awards committee "reflects a remarkably important contribution to the field".

David Regan has been awarded $155,000 over five years from NSERC for his Discovery Grant entitled "Early parallel processing of visual spatial information and its subsequent convergence in the visual pathway."

Lauren Sergio has been awarded $155,000 over five years from NSERC for her Discovery Grant entitled "Brain mechanisms for eye-hand coordination: Experience and sex related differences."

Ellen Bialystok has been granted $49,900 from CIHR for her Catalyst Grant in Pilot Projects in Aging entitled "Effects of normal aging on brain networks over th tim course of working memory processing: A simulataneous EEG/fMRI study." Sylvain Moreno and Lynn Luo are co-investigators for this project.

Christine Kurtz Landy has received funding from Echo: Improving Women's Health in Ontario for her project entitled "Postpartum Health and Service Use: Does Delivery Methods Matter?"

Michael Riddell has received $118,085 from MaRs and the Centre for Drug Research and Development for his project entitled "Somatostatin 2 receptior antagonists for the prevention of insulin-induced hypoglycemia."

Shayna Rosenbaum is a co-applicant on a successful CIHR operating grant held by the University of Toronto. The project titled "Behavioural and functional neuroimaging studies and recent and remote spatial memory in humans" has been awarded $188,284 over 5 years.

January 2011

Olivier Birot has received $79,260 in infrastructure funding from the Canadian Foundation for Innovation (CFI) to support his research on muscle microcirculation in health and diseases.

Nichilas Cepeda has received $100,777 in infrastructure funding from the Canadian Foundation for Innovation (CFI) to establish a developmental cognitive neuroscience laboratory for research on learning and memory, cognitive flexibility and musical training.

Jennifer Connolly has been awarded $59,560 from the Ministry of Children and Youth Services' Strategic Research Fund for her project entitled "Dating Violence, Sexual Health and Pregnancy among Girls in Residential Services: Enhancing Resilience by Reducing the Risks."

Rebecca Pillai Riddell has been awarded $312,203 from CIHR for her Operating Grant entitled "Bridging the gap between infant mental health and infant health: Bringing attachment theory in the infant acute pain context."

Laurie Wilcox has received $436,936 from NSERC for her Strategic Project Grant titled "Depth in Motion" which assesses steroscopic depth perception, 3D displays, human to computer interaction, human factors, immersive environments and virtual reality. Ali Lazimi and Robert Allison are co-investigators on the study.

Leslie Greenberg has received $64,000 from the York Foundation / Breuninger Foundation Stuttgart for her project entitled "Project Title: Emotion Literacy Program."

Joe Baker has received $10,000 from the Ministry of Health Promotion in conjunction with the Canadian Sport Centres Ontario(CSC-O) and the Centre for High Performance Sport at the University of Toronto: Research Program in Applied Sport Sciences for his project titled "Pathways to the Podium: A large scale examination of long-term athlete development

Jennifer Connolly has been awarded $45,396.77 from the Ministry of Children and Youth Services' Strategic Research Fund for her project entitled "The Development of Romantic Relationships among Youth Aged 12 to 25 Years."

Will Gage has received $98,875 from CIHR for his Catalyst Grant in Bone Health titled "Acute effects of mechanical loads on bone and cartilage turnover: A pilot study to develop a model for human research". David Hood and Jason Vescovi are co-investigators on the study.

Jennine Rawana has been awarded $58,652.40 from the Ministry of Children and Youth Services'
Strategic Research Fund for her project entitled "Developmental trajectories of emotion regulation among adolescents." Gordon Flett is a co-investigator on the project.

Hala Tamim has received $40,000 from MITACS Accelerate program for her project entitled "Enrolment of Chinese Canadians in a Cardiac Prevention Program: Barriers and Promoters."

October 2010

The Ministry of Health Promotion and Sport has approved $300,000 in new funding for the Pre-Diabetes Detection and Physical Activity Intervention Delivery Program (PRE-PAID). The project is led by a team of researchers from the School of Kinesiology & Health Science including Norman Gledhill, Veronica Jamnik, and Michael Riddell.

September 2010

Joseph Baker has received $100,563 from SSHRC for his project titled "An uneven playing field: understanding relative age effects in sport.” Jessica Fraser-Thomas is a co-investigator on the study.

Nicholas Cepeda has received $132,826 from SSHRC for his project titled "Enhancing cognitive flexibility and academic achievement through musical training.” Ellen Bialystok and Jay Rahn are co-investigators on the study.

Tamara Daly has been awarded the 19th Annual Labelle Lectureship in Health Services Research. She will discuess international comparison in long-term care.

Kerry L Kawakami has received $96,400 from SSHRC for her project titled "Mispredicting behavioral response to racism.”

Jennifer Kuk has been awarded $50,000 from the Heart & Stroke Foundation of Ontario for her piolet project titled "RADICAL: Race and the perception of Diabetes and Cardiovascular disease risk factors in the context of Canada's Lifestyle and Obesity guidelines."

Maria Legerstee has received $80,800 from SSHRC for her project titled "Social cognition: The influence of parental and child variables.” David Flora is a co-investigator on the study.

Judith MacDonnell has received $86,231 from SSHRC for her project titled "From boomers to generation Y: Exploring the intersection of generational and career dynamics in nurses' activism.”

Christine Maheu has been awarded $32,013 from the Canadian Nurses Foundation's Nursing Care Partnership for her project entitled "Cognitive existential intervention to address fear of recurrence in women with cancer."

Juan Pascual-Leone has received $113,064 from SSHRC for his project titled "Measurement of developmental intelligence via mental attention: Comparison with other approaches, task-analytical modeling, and longitudinal testing.” Janice M. Johnson is a co-investigator on the study.

Alexandra Rutherford has received $83,564 from SSHRC for her project titled " Imagining gender in the 20th century: the uneasy relationship of psychology and feminism.”

Ward Struthers has received $81,071 from SSHRC for his project titled "The effect of preemptive forgiveness on repentance.”

Liane R. Ginsburg has been awarded $ 15,000 for the Meetings, Planning and Dissemination Grant: Knowledge Translation. Liane's project title is "Learning to Learn from Patient Safety Events." Liane and her re research team have recently developed and published an instrument (PSE learning instrument) to measure learning responses following patient safety events

Walter Heinrichs has been awarded $317,577 for his CIHR Operating Grant titled “Cognitive Exceptionality and Impairment in Schizophrenia.”

Joel Katz has been awarded$306,530 for his CIHR Operating Grant titled "The Transition from Acute Postsurgical Pain to Chronic Pain: The Role of Pain Anxiety and Parental Influences in Paediatric Pain/”

Joel Lexchin has been awarded $17,500 for the Meetings, Planning and Dissemination Grant: Health Services and Policy Research. The project title for his Research is "Interactions of pharmaceutical sales representatives and general practitioner."
