KINE Awards and Scholarship Application Process & Deadlines

To apply for the Kinesiology and Health Science academic and Sport & Recreation awards/scholarships/bursaries, students are urged to complete both the online Fall/Winter Student Financial Profile (SFP), as well as the Co-curricular Information Form (links provided below) at their earliest convenience. When completing the SFP, students and student-athletes are asked to complete the Community Service/Volunteer, Extra-Curricular Activities and Personal Statement sections, detailing their contributions as they pertain to the award(s) for which they are applying.

Entering Students

Bobby Orr Entrance Scholarship

Bobby Orr, NHL legend and successful entrepreneur, has generously funded an endowment at York which provides this annual entrance scholarship to an outstanding student choosing to pursue the study of Kinesiology & Health Science at York University. The criteria states that the recipient have a distinguished academic and extracurricular record at the secondary school level.

The value of this scholarship is $2,100.

Kinesiology & Health Science Entrance Award

This entrance award is given annually to an outstanding student choosing to pursue the study of Kinesiology & Health Science at York University. The criteria states that the recipient have a distinguished academic and extracurricular record at the secondary school level. The recipient must have a demonstrated financial need and meet the OSAP residency requirement.

The value of this award is $2,100.

Continuing Students

Bryce M. Taylor Scholarship

This Scholarship is named in memory of the founding Chair and Director of the School of Kinesiology & Health Science, Dr. Bryce Taylor, who led the School from 1964 to 1976 and established the Sport Administration Certificate Program. Dr. Taylor served on the Executive Committees of the Canadian Association of Health, Physical Education and Recreation; Coaching Association of Canada; Canadian Olympic Association; Canadian Gymnastics Federation; and the YMCA. This Scholarship is awarded to an honours Kinesiology & Health Science student who is entering his/her final year (ie: has completed 14 academic courses/84 credits), has a minimum of a B cumulative average, and has established a distinguished academic and leadership/service record.

The value of this Scholarship is $1,000.

CAHPERD Student Award

Canadian Association for Health, Physical Education, Recreation & Dance (CAHPERD) This award is given annually to a Year 3 Kinesiology & Health Science honours major student, who has completed a minimum of 60 credits, has played a leadership role in School of Kinesiology & Health Science student organizations and has attained a minimum, cumulative grade average of B. The recipient serves as a liaison between York and CAHPERD during his/her final year and will be encouraged to publicize and promote on campus the professional work of CAHPERD.

A certificate and one-year membership in CAHPERD (commencing after graduation) are awarded.

Dr. Charles Bull Athletic Therapy Scholarship

Named in honour of Dr. Charles Bull, in recognition of his contribution to the field of sports medicine, this scholarship is awarded annually to an honours Kinesiology and Health Science student who is enrolled in the Athletic Therapy Certificate Program. Applicants must have a minimum B cumulative average and have a record of outstanding leadership/service in the Athletic Therapy Certificate Program.

The value of this scholarship is $500.

Lily D'Urzo Scholarship

This scholarship is named in memory of Lily D'Urzo, a former York student, instructor and coach. It is awarded annually to a continuing honours Kinesiology & Health Science major student who has completed a minimum of 75 academic credits. Applicants must have a minimum cumulative average of B and must have contributed in a leadership role to the School of Kinesiology & Health Science. Financial need may also be a consideration.

The value of this scholarship is $1,000.

May and George Flint Scholarship

This scholarship, named in memory of May and George Flint, is awarded annually to a continuing honours Kinesiology & Health Science major student. Applicants must have a minimum cumulative average of B and have participated in the extracurricular activities of the School of Kinesiology & Health Science.

The value of this scholarship is $500.

Michael Smith Award

Named in memory of Dr. Michael D. Smith, a former professor in sport sociology and leading researcher in the field of domestic violence, this award is given annually to a continuing Kinesiology & Health Science major, who has a minimum grade average of B, meets the OSAP residency requirement, has a demonstrated financial need and may have extracurricular involvements including volunteer work with the disadvantaged, or in support of social agencies or causes.

The value of this award is $500.

R.F. Price Scholarship

Named in memory of R. F. "Bud" Price, a former administrator in the School, this scholarship is awarded annually to a continuing honours Kinesiology and Health Science major student. Applicants must have a minimum cumulative average of B and have contributed in a leadership role to the School of Kinesiology & Health Science. Financial need may also be consideration.

The value of this scholarship is $500.

Robert Munro Menzies Award

These awards have been established by Robert Munro Menzies, a York University graduate who enjoyed a fulfilling career as a teacher and coach with the Toronto Board of Education. These awards are presented annually to Kinesiology & Health Science majors who:

  • are continuing interuniversity athletes;
  • have successfully completed a minimum of 18 credits in the previous academic year;
  • have achieved a minimum B grade average in the previous year of study;
  • meet the OSAP residency requirement;
  • have a demonstrated financial need; and
  • are Canadian citizens/permanent residents.
Preference may be given to applicants who are returning members of the interuniversity badminton and volleyball teams.

The value of each award is $500.

School of Kinesiology & Health Science Honour Awards

These awards are presented annually to continuing Kinesiology & Health Science honours students who were named to the School of Kinesiology & Health Science Honour Roll in the previous year of study, have a demonstrated financial need and meet the OSAP residency requirement.

The value of each award is $500.

These awards have been funded through the generosity of faculty, staff, alumni, and friends of the School of Kinesiology & Health Science with matching support from the Ontario Student Opportunities Trust Fund.

School of Kinesiology and Health Science Honour Roll

To recognize students who have distinguished themselves in the study of Kinesiology & Health Science, an Honour Roll is declared annually. Members include full-time Kinesiology & Health Science honours major students who have:

  • completed a minimum of 6 academic credits in Kinesiology & Health Science;
  • a cumulative average of B or higher;
  • a grade point average of 7.5 or higher in Kinesiology & Health Science academic courses; and
  • an average of B or higher in Kinesiology & Health Science practicum courses.
No Application Required

Sport Administration Leadership Award

Established by alumni of the Sport Administration Certificate Program, this award is presented annually to a continuing student who is a current member of the Sport Administration Certificate Program, has maintained a B average, has demonstrated outstanding leadership and commitment, a demonstrated financial need and meets the OSAP residency requirement.

The value of this award is $500.

Year 1 - Bryce M. Taylor Book Prize

This Book Prize, named in honour of the first Chair of the School of Kinesiology & Health Science, is awarded to the Year 1 Kinesiology & Health Science honours major student who has:

  • completed a minimum of 24 academic credits (of which at least 6 credits are in Kinesiology and Health Science courses);
  • a minimum B cumulative average overall;
  • a minimum cumulative average of B in practica;
  • the highest cumulative grade point average in Kinesiology & Health Science courses; and
  • not previously won this Book Prize.
The value of this Prize is $250.

Year 2 - Frank Cosentino Book Prize

This Book Prize, named in honour of the second Chair of the School of Kinesiology & Health Science, is awarded to the Year 2 Kinesiology & Health Science honours major student who has:

  • completed a minimum of 48 academic credits;
  • a minimum B cumulative average overall;
  • a minimum cumulative average of B in practica;
  • the highest cumulative grade point average in Kinesiology & Health Science courses; and
  • not previously won this Book Prize.
The value of this Prize is $250.

Year 3 - Stuart G. Robbins Book Prize

This Book Prize, named in honour of the third Chair of the School of Kinesiology & Health Science, is awarded to the Year 3 Kinesiology & Health Science honours major student who has:

  • completed a minimum of 75 academic credits;
  • a minimum B cumulative average overall;
  • a minimum cumulative average of B in practica;
  • the highest cumulative grade point average in Kinesiology & Health Science courses; and
  • not previously won this Book Prize.
The value of this Prize is $250.

Year 4 - Norman Gledhill Book Prize

This Book Prize, named in honour of the fourth Chair of the School of Kinesiology & Health Science, is awarded to the Year 4 Kinesiology & Health Science honours major student who has:

  • completed a minimum of 105 academic credits;
  • a minimum B cumulative average overall;
  • a minimum cumulative average of B in practica;
  • the highest cumulative grade point average in Kinesiology & Health Science courses; and
  • not previously won this Book Prize.
The value of this Prize is $250.

Graduation Awards

CSEP Undergraduate Student Award

Canadian Society for Exercise Physiology (CSEP) This award recognizes excellence in academic achievement in the sport sciences. The award is given at Convocation each spring, to the graduating Kinesiology & Health Science honours major student achieving the highest academic standing in the sport sciences portion of his/her Kinesiology & Health Science curriculum.

The recipient is awarded an engraved medallion and citation.

Tait McKenzie Honour Society

Graduating students who have distinguished themselves in the undergraduate study of Kinesiology & Health Science are named to the Tait McKenzie Honour Society. Members include graduating majors who have a cumulative average of B or higher, a grade point average of 7.5 in Kinesiology and Health Science academic courses, and an average of B or higher in Kinesiology & Health Science

practicum courses. The Sport Sculpture of R. Tait McKenzie, a book by A. Kozar, will be presented to each member.
