Research

The School of Nursing’s faculty members are involved in innovative and leading-edge research, and have established national and international reputations in their areas of expertise. Faculty members’ programs of research and scholarly activities contribute to better understanding of current and challenging health and nursing phenomena.

Faculty members’ scholarly activities encompass a range of areas (including, but not limited to, community health, environmental health, global health, health policy, homeless populations, immigrant health, mental health, women’s health) and cross the life span (children, youth, adults, and older adults), utilizing diverse theoretical and methodological approaches (e.g., critical feminist perspectives, human science nursing theories, arts-informed research, critical inquiry, ethnographic research, participatory action research, phenomenological and hermeneutic inquiry, program evaluation, quantitative methods). Specific areas of focus include chronic illness (e.g., acquired brain injury, pain, quality of life), oncology and palliative care (pediatric and adult), health-related lived experiences (e.g., grieving, quality of life, resilience, suffering), health service delivery (e.g., children's rights, client-centred care, innovation and change, leadership, patient safety and quality improvement, telehomecare), and nursing education (e.g., mentoring, teaching-learning).

School of Nursing research successes include a competitive personnel award as well as a chair in women’s mental health research (see below).
