About the Program
Undergraduate students in York University's Department of Psychology have the option of working toward either a Bachelor of Arts or a Bachelor of Science degree in Psychology, and may choose to focus on specific areas of interest such as neuroscience, social, or abnormal psychology, or follow a more generalized program that covers a wide variety of aspects of the discipline.
The Undergraduate psychology program is designed to offer multiple degree options including BA-3 years, BA-4 years, Specialized Honours BA-4 years, BSc-3 years, Honours BSc-4 years, and Specialized Honours BSc-4 years in addition to double majors and major/minors degrees. There is also a unique joint program in Rehabilitation Services offered by York and Seneca College.
The BA psychology program exposes students to a full range of psychological concepts and applications, while the BSc option adds a focus on the physical sciences (chemistry, physics, and biology) to a full range of discipline-specific courses. Our degree programs are excellent preparation for further graduate studies in Psychology or for many diverse career options.
Our exciting Psychology programs offer an extensive and diverse selection of courses taught both in classroom settings and on the Internet. There are also evening and summer courses
offered for working students who wish to pursue their studies on a part-time basis.
In the first year of the undergraduate curriculum, students are offered an introductory course which broadly surveys the field of Psychology in terms of its history, theories, methods and applications. In the second and third years, students select from a wide range of courses in specific areas of the field, and the fourth year consists mainly of small seminars on selected topics. Students have opportunities in their third and fourth years to work on an individual basis with professors of their choice in Independent Readings and Independent Research courses. Honours students complete a thesis in the fourth year, either on an individual basis with a professor of their choice or in an Advanced Research seminar. Fourth year honours thesis students also present their research at poster day. Here are some pictures taken of the poster day event for 2011 in the Vari Hall Rotunda
The Psychology program at York is structured so that students are exposed to the breadth of psychology but may also tailor their degree program to focus on specific areas of interest.
