Research Centres and Projects
- Muscle Health Research Centre (MHRC)
The Muscle Health Research Centre (MHRC) provides a centralized and focused research emphasis on the importance of muscle health for the overall health and well-being of Canadians. The first organized research unit in the Faculty of Health dedicated to biomedical sciences, the purpose and intent of this Centre is to facilitate the integrated study of muscle biology in the broadest terms, including muscle development, disease, and adaptation to exercise from molecular, cellular and whole body perspectives.
- LaMarsh Centre for Child and Youth Research
The LaMarsh Centre is home to York University faculty who share a common interest in promoting scientific understanding of youth and the challenges they face in today’s society. The Centre aims to support and disseminate interdisciplinary research with a particular focus on the health and wellbeing of Canada’s youth. Preventing youth violence and promoting positive development is the central focus of the Centre.
- Centre for Vision Research (CVR)
Founded in 1992, the Centre for Vision Research (CVR) is home to investigators from Psychology, Biology, Kinesiology, and Computer Science and Engineering. CVR focuses on interdisciplinary research into human and machine vision and visual processes, into vision's interactions with other senses and with motor and cognitive processes, and in applications such as visually-guided robotics or clinical diagnosis and treatment.
- York Institute for Health Research (YIHR)
The York Institute for Health Research (YIHR) is home to a new breed of health researchers who actively conduct research from within interdisciplinary teams and cross-sectoral networks. With both eminent researchers and emerging scholars, YIHR draws together a range of social, biomedical, environmental, and behavioural scientists, as well as researchers from business, law, education, and the physical sciences. As a result, research at YIHR bridges the divide between the sciences and social sciences, in order to deliver world real solutions.
- The Canadian Action and Perception Network (CAPnet)
The Canadian Action and Perception Network (CAPnet) is a research
consortium founded by members of the York Centre for Vision Research
(Toronto), The University of Western Ontario Centre for Brain and Mind
(London) and the Queens Centre for Neuroscience (Kingston). CAPnet
celebrates Canada's international leadership and close knit community in
the neuroscience of action and perception. The mandate of CAPnet is to promote major collaborative projects both between the core member universities
and with their academic, clinical, and industrial partners.
CAPnet's research goal is to understand how the brain uses sensory information to construct an internal perceptual representation of the world and guide purposeful movements, both in health and sickness.
- Milton & Ethel Harris Research Initiative (MEHRI)
The Milton and Ethel Harris Research Initiative (MEHRI) is the result of a $5 million donation from the Harris family of Toronto. MEHRI studies the processes that promote the development of a healthy mind in young children. The goal of this research initiative is to understand the interaction between psychological and neurobiological processes in order to identify and mitigate potential problems as early as possible, and to enhance the development of healthy minds in all children.
- Canadian Network for Research on Governance of the Health Workforce (CNR-GHW)
The CNR-GHW is a national network of researchers, regulatory decision makers, health educators and professional associations committed to collaborative research on health professional workforce governance. The Network stimulates, promotes, facilitates and disseminates research projects that will support evidence-informed decision making on the governance and policy issues that impact the quality, structure and accessibility of the health workforce.
York is host to the International Consortium for Research on Governance of the Health Workforce, of which the CNR-GHW is part. The Faculty of Health is also host to the research arm of the United Nations University dealing with governance issues (IEGL York, the Institute for Ethics, Governance and Law, in partnership with Griffith University, Australia). This will be the first branch of the United Nations University located in Canada and it will be focused on the governance of the health workforce.
- The Physical Activity and Diabetes (PAD) Initiative
This unprecedented initiative will provide a unique approach to helping young people
with diabetes manage their disease. The approach will be focused on exercise and
sport and will incorporate clinical consultation, high-impact research and continuing medical
education. The PAD comprises of a referral-based clinic for exercise evaluation and
counselling, a youth Sports Camp and a research laboratory.
The Sports Camp has been run two years in a row as a summer camp. Read
the blog about camp events.
