School of Health Policy & Management

Undergraduate Program

Chair: Mary Wiktorowicz

About the Program

The School of Health Policy & Management offers a broad perspective and teaches about all aspects of the health care system as well as about other factors, such as wealth and ethnicity, that influence the health of Canadians. Learning takes places not only in classroom settings but also through field placements. The faculty in the School are internationally recognized for their research and teaching.

Our program offers a tremendous amount of flexibility - students in the School of Health Policy and Management can specialize in one or more of: Health Management, eHealth/Health Informatics, and Health Policy. For instance a student can enter the health management stream and also complete the health informatics certificate during their 4 years of study. Students can also enroll in a general Honours BHS program.that allows them to complete pre-med and other pre-health professional course requirements. In addition, students can do a double major or major-minor in conjunction with many other York programs.

Graduates of our program are equipped to begin a career in a variety of health related areas and they are also well positioned to apply for graduate studies such as a Masters Degree or PhD. Students who enroll in the general Honours BHS can structure their courses so they are ready to apply to a health professional program such as medicine, occupational or physio therapy, nursing.

The School Handbook will give you details of the courses and programs we offer. You may download the PDF version here or refer to the online version.

The following programs are offered by the School:

  • A Specialized Honours BHS program where students can major in either
    Health Policy, Health Management or Health Informatics;
  • An Honours BHS that will be useful to those students wishing to pursue a double major Honours degree or a Major/Minor combination;
  • 30 credit Minors in Health Management, Health Informatics and Health Policy; and
  • A cross-disciplinary certificate in Health Informatics.

We expect our students to have the following competencies at the end of their studies within the School:

  • An in-depth knowledge of key health issues
  • Understanding of the social and political contexts of health care.
  • Effective communication skills
  • Critical thinking skills
  • Research skills
  • Development of skills to be an effective team player working with the general public, the health care and social service sectors, academia, government and business
