Heather Lotherington:  Research Interests

My main focus is multimodal literacies. A driving interest is the potential for incorporating multilingualism in contemporary literacy instruction.

My main research context is Joyce Public School. I have been working together with teachers at Joyce Public School for close to a decade, and, since, 2008, with Professor Jennifer Jenson at York University to create a learning community dedicated to the active, exploratory pursuit of new ways to teach literacy that welcome the linguistic wealth and knowledge of the community and incorporate multiple media. Our learning community has driven award-winning pedagogical innovation that has spurred substantial academic writing, including a recent scholarly book, Pedagogy of Multiliteracies: Rewriting Goldilocks (2011, Routledge); invited research and pedagogically-focused presentations at local, regional, national and international meetings, and creative teacher-student materials that include children’s books, claymations, video presentations, and websites, including a dedicated site helping parents to guide their children in learning.
