Welcome to Science, Technology and Society, the Internet version. I'm your teacher, Dr. Hart Fischer, a retired high school guidance specialist. If you need to get in touch with me use my email, natsci@rogers.com, please refer to me as Hart and let me know who you are by using your given name as well. I usually answer e-mail once a day, more often during the start of a course.
Please be aware that I use a spam filter in my email program. In order for me to read your message make sure that the message you send me has NATS1760B in the title. If you prefer to call me at home by phone I can be reached at 705-445-6876, usually after 7:00pm.  If you feel that your question, concern, or comment is of interest to other members of the class, please post it on our Discussion forum on the Moodle site. That way it will be certain to be seen by me and other members of the class [More about this later].

Why should you take a course with a retired guidance counsellor. Well, I do have the academic credentials to do almost anything in introductory science. Bachelor of Science, Masters Degree and Doctorate in parasitology came from the University of Toronto. Teaching and research experience in parasitology, anatomy and physiology, and genetics followed at Toronto, York, and Middlebury College in Vermont. Then I proceeded to Queen's University inKingston to obtain my High School teaching diploma in mathematics and science. Later I went to OISE to receive my guidance specialist certification. I retired from Collingwood Collegiate Institute in 2001 but have continued teaching here at York, a process that started in 1969 and has continued, with the exception of a four year hiatus when I was at Middlebury College, ever since. I have taught Natural Science courses at Atkinson College since 1975, and shifted to the Faculty of Science in 2006. So you could say I have a lot of teaching experience.

Currently my extra curricular interests involve hiking, canoeing, skiing, photography and Sunday Night Football, especially the New England Patriots who will rise again.

I have been married to the same wonderful lady since 1967, Canada's Centennial - a great way to remember what anniversary it is in any given year ;-). We have a married son. He and his wife have presented us with the world's sweetest granddaughter and the worlds most adorable grandson.
