Research Assistants

Definition: A non-student research assistant is a research employee working on the project in a technical, administrative, or research capacity where the work is highly directed by the principal investigator (PI).

Research Associates

Research Associates

Definition: A research associate (non-student) is an employee who possesses an advanced degree and who is actively and directly engaged in the research with the Principal Investigator (PI), and who may be credited in any dissemination of research results.

Research Casuals

Definition: A Research Casual is an individual employed on an hourly basis with the agreement at the time of hire that employment will not exceed three continuous months on a full-time basis (i.e. works 35 hours a week for no longer than 3 consecutive months); OR on a part-time basis working less than 24 hours per week, for a limited term, which may be greater than 3 months.  These employees may be directly involved in research work (e.g. interviewing subjects, data entry etc.) but may also assist a PI or ORU with clerical duties.  Research Casual salaries are paid in a biweekly basis and expensed from research accounts.

Steps - Not affiliated with ORU

  • Write a Job Description
  • Determine available funding in your research grant/contract.
  • Contact your Faculty Research Officer for assistance.
  • Once Pay Rate, Job Offer and Contract have been determined complete and submit ETF - Casual Employee (PDF) to Payroll
  • Complete and submit Timesheet (PDF) on a bi-weekly basis, according to the pay schedule.

Graduate Students - Research Assistants

Definition: A Graduate Student - research assistant is defined as a graduate student registered as full-time at York University who is receiving financial assistance from or through York University in support of research or academic activities relevant and related to that student’s field(s) of study within the academic programme.  The term “field(s) of study” shall have the meaning as set out in the Faculty of Graduate Studies Calendar.” (Collective Agreement, Article 3.01)
