The York-U of T Institute of European Studies is a cooperative venture established with seed money from the European Union and the two Universities. The Institute began operation in the 2000-2001 academic year with an inauguration held at both Universities on September 21, 2000 on the theme "Canadians on Europe: Research and Reflections."

The York-U of T Institute is one of four such Institutes of European Studies established in Canada after a nation-wide competition. The other institutes are at the University of British Columbia, Carleton University, and a second joint institute at the Université de Montréal and McGill University. The Institutes work closely together to promote European Studies across Canada.
