Dr Elysée Nouvet is a Post-Doctoral Fellow in Humanitarian Health Care Ethics at McMaster University. She holds a PhD in Social Anthropology from York University, a Masters in Visual Anthropology from Goldsmiths College, University of London, and a BA in cultural anthropology from Concordia University. Her past funded studies on the social impacts of distress in a Nicaraguan shanty (SSHRC 2005-8), gendered illness and healing in Pentecostal churches (FCAR 2000-1; Commonwealth Fellowship 2001-2), and visual displays of suffering, have been united in their concern with the ways in which structural violence shapes corporealities, is survived, negotiated, and contested. Dr. Nouvet’s current research explores moral ideas and ideals of medical humanitarian in community and transnational arenas, with a focus on local experiences of, and responses to, medical aid in Central America.
