La Pompe is a settlement on the south shore of
Bequia, which, together with Paget Farm and Friendship,
forms part of the area called 'Southside'. La Pompe was
originally a fishing and whaling community, although
various factors have rendered these maritime activities
less profitable today. Because the plantations that once existed in Southside were smaller than that of Hamilton, La Pompe is a more racially and ethnically mixed village. Tourism has had less impact in Southside than in Admiralty Bay, where there are more hotels and guest houses. La Pompe is mentioned less often than Paget Farm as linguistically distinctive. |
