The purpose of this assignment is to write a descriptive paper on the themes covered in the literature in ONE of the following three areas. The focus will be on correct referencing of sources. Please follow strictly instructions in NOTES ON STYLE FOR SOCIOLOGICAL ESSAYS among HANDOUTS on the teaching page of the web, since this paper will be graded as much on style as on content.

Areas

1. Italians in Canada before WWII

2. Italians in Canada in the immediate Post War period

3. Italian-Canadian Females

Sources

1. Look at our bibliography (which you should have copied from the Internet). Each reference is numbered. Here are suggestions for references you may want to consult depending on which of the above three areas you chose. Most of the references are on reserve.

Area ONE: 011,041,042,043,044,066,067,071,073,084,085,086

Area TWO: 011,018,024,025,037,038,046,048,049,050,051,054,062,063,064,074,075,077,079

Area THREE: 001, 004, 005a, 008, 014, 017, 025, 034, 046, 047, 048, 049, 050, 055, 062, 064, 073, 074, 077

2. In addition to the above, look up any other sources written about Italians in Canada under your area. For further references, consult York's library on the internet.

Focus

Once you have chosen one of the three areas, write a 8-10 page typed double-spaced report on what themes are covered in your sources. The paper is to focus on themes and then refer to all sources that include these themes. [Do not write your paper by covering one source at a time.] In order to do this, you must consult a large number of sources (at least 12 should appear in your bibliography). Do NOT give direct quotes unless absolutely necessary. Tell us in your own words, what the authors have stated.

Themes

A theme is any aspect on which an article or book focuses. Many will focus on more than one theme. Themes could include the immigration process, socialization to Canada, family, division of labour among the sexes, education, work and jobs, prejudice, assimilation etc. etc.
