Class presentations: Our Focus this term in on Assimilation. Presentations are about Italians in CANADA.

Comment about presentations: While overall presentations in first term were good, I felt that too many people were reading their presentations and going at a speed that was difficult to follow. I would prefer if we could slow down and try to 'speak to' the class. We should be able to absorb presentations, in a slow to moderate fashion.

The Theoretical Perspective of your topic
To be presented by 2 people. See below for suggestions
(Intro. soc. textbooks and specialized books). NOTE: By Theoretical aspects, we mean what does sociology in general have to say.

[Look up references on 1) Class, Mobility, Occupation, Education 2) Books, articles about The Family and Sex roles 3) Books, references about How we acquire an identity. 4) How others form images of us, Stereotyping, Prejudice, Discrimination 5) What is the policy of MC all about? Why did Canada opt for it? What other options exist? What are the pros and cons? How are different Ethnic groups in Canada affected by it.]

Persons 1 and 2
Topic ONE: One person focus on theories about social class and Social Mobility, another on the role played by Education, Occupation, Incomes and Home ownership in determining where one stands in the class structure.
Topic TWO: One focus on theories of the family another focus on gender roles.
Topic THREE: One focus on theories of identity in general another on concerns with Canadian identity (e.g. French-English differences, Impact of US culture on Canadian identity, Why most immigrants are hyphenated Canadians).
Topic FOUR: One focus on theories of prejudice and discrimination another on Stereotyping and Social distance.
Topic FIVE: One focus on what our Policy of MC is all about another on alternatives to MC.

Person 3: How your topic is affected by Assimilation (consult lecture notes+textbooks on this topic). In the case of those presenting the policy of Multiculturalism, consider which ethnic groups are most and least assimilated and why (Is it length of time in Canada? Is it because of language barriers? Is it because of prejudice on the part of Canadians... what helps, what hinders assimilation?)

Person 4: What has been the experience of Italians in Canada.

Persons 5 and 6: Each compare to situation of Italians in Canada to that of another ethnic group(s).

Each person will make a presentation in class and then hand a written copy, for grading (10% of grade). Give references. These are due one week after your group presentation.
