The cover page should include: course number; TOPIC of your essay, Student name and number. Please number your pages. The Contents page  MUST show the 6 headings below and which pages they begin on in the essay. Include your bibliography. As usual you must give, in the text, a reference for EVERYTHING you write! This can include personal interviews, but don't base your essay mainly on interviews. See NOTES FOR STYLE and comments made in the first term essay for referencing. As much as possible, if using interviews, refer to:

Questions about your ancestor's journey from Italy (or homeland) to Canada

Every Essay must include the following 5 sections and bibliography.

1. INTRODUCTION: What is your TOPIC? Why is it relevant to study it? What does this essay cover? (1/2 pp)

2. SOCIOLOGICAL THEORY
a) Introduce the TOPIC (Religion, Education, Economy, Sex roles, Stereotyping, Status, Identity), giving generalizations that apply to all societies.
b) How is your area affected by ASSIMILATION? In order to consider this, refer to your lecture-notes re Gordon's 7/8 variables. If necessary, consult Gordon's 'Assimilation In American Life,' in your biblio. For example, How would assimilation of immigrants in general, affect Beliefs, Education opportunities, Jobs, Changes in Sex Roles,  Stereotyping, Prejudice, Discrimination? Social Mobility, Identity etc.) (Don't mention anything about Italy or Italians in Canada, in this section)
Best sources: Introductory sociology texts; specialized sociology texts on your topic use of  Gordon's 'Assimilation' Variables.  (4-5pp)

3. APPLICATION TO ITALY 1940-1970
What role did YOUR TOPIC ( Religion, Education, Economy, Sex roles, Stereotyping, Status, Identity) play in the lives of (mainly) Southern Italians in this period. THIS APPLIES TO ITALY (not CANADA). We covered this in first term. Use sources about life in Italy (especially the South) about this time. Best sources: Books and articles referred to in first term about S. Italian villages (which you will find listed in the Bibliography for this course). You may include interviews with parents and grand-parents, but this should not be the principal content of this section. (3-5pp)

4. WHAT IS THE SITUATION OF ITALIANS IN CANADA SINCE THE 1970's?
How has YOUR TOPIC ( Religion, Education, Economy, Sex roles, Stereotyping, Status, Identity) changed for Italians living in Canada today?
Best sources: Use Statistics, Articles/books written since 1970. You may include interviews with parents and grand-parents, or even with notable Italians like politicians, business-persons etc. but this should not be the principal content of this section (4-5pp).

5. CONCLUSION
Summarize your findings, focusing on Italians in Canada today, what the FUTURE holds for the group and discuss the degree to which Italians have assimilated into Canadian Life. (1/2 pp)

6. BIBLIOGRAPHY which should include at least 15 references. Added consideration will be given if you have used sources, in addition to the ones  in our Class Bibliography.
