Sociology 4230 6.0A Sociology of Ethnic Groups: ITALIANS IN ITALY AND CANADA

The course will examine the process by which immigrant groups become detached from their
homelands and integrate into Canadian society. This course focuses on Italians, but the situation is
similar for other ethnic groups like Greeks, Chinese, and Ukrainians. Theoretically, the course
will focus on SOCIAL CHANGE in the homeland and INTEGRATION in Canada.

Format: One three hour lecture/seminar per week

Assignments & Grades:
In first term a brief descriptive paper will be required (10 % ).  In each term, a presentation based
on Readings will be made by each student in a group (10 % and 10 % ). Grading for presentations,
will be divided into two: 5% for the individual presentation and 5% for the group presentation
in each term - so make sure you 'plan' you presentation with your group.  At the end of each term,
there will be a test based on concepts and topics (15% and 15%).  An essay will be written in the
second term, (30 % ) and in each term, attendance will account for (5 % and 5%)

Prerequisite: Students must have successfully completed 14 courses, or 84 credits. However,
third year Honours students with 13 completed courses who are also taking summer courses may
enroll. A reading knowledge of Italian would be an asset, but is not a requirement.
