SOCI 4230 6.0A: ITALIANS

This year, 2004-2005, I will  be conducting a 4th Year Seminar on Italians in Italy and in Canada, SOCI4230 6.0A. Since arriving in Canada in 1968 I have always been interested in Italian Immigrants. This interest springs from the fact that I lived in Italy for two years. Also, when I was completing my Sociological Thesis in Louvain University, Belgium, I carried our fieldwork in a remote Sicilian Village called Troina.  On arrival in Toronto, I studied several aspects of the Italian Community here, including the origins of Italians. In 1974-1975 on my first sabbatical, I spent a year visiting most of these village origins in Italy. I have also lived in Vancouver for a year, and carried out two studies of Italians there in 1978-1979. In 1988-1989 a colleague (who had worked on the original study) and I, returned to Troina after 25 years and wrote a book about it.
