Motion
received from Professor Bruce Flattery, Senator
Motion: Senate's confidence in the president's
ability to manage the university has been severely compromised by the
widespread damage to academic programs and the apparent lack of all progress in
labour negotiations during this five-week strike; we urge President Marsden to
begin the rebuilding of normal confidence by seeing that a settlement is
reached immediately and access to university facilities fully restored to the
community.
Rationale:
"At its best, Senate and its committees are innovative
in shaping the learning environment for our mutual benefit. At a minimum, Senate provides an arena of
contestation among alternative visions of academic life, as well as a locus of
accountability, for those who administer the institution, to the faculty and
students whose work gives the university its raison d'Ltre." Bob Drummond message, January 2000 Senate
