Save the Term: day of action Friday,
November, 24th
***
please forward widely to your students and others ***
Thursday
marks the beginning of week five of the CUPE strike. This strike
has
now cost the university more teaching days than any other strike in
York's
history.
The
CUPE strike has had a grave impact on the University, especially on
students.
Indeed, whether or not the Fall term can be salvaged is unclear.
And
since many Fall courses are prerequisites to Winter courses, these
Winter
courses are likewise in jeopardy.
The
loss to learning, and the loss to the financial resources that support
that
learning, by now are incalculable. It certainly is not 'business as
usual'
at York University.
To
some it appears that the Administration is ignoring the mounting costs
to
students and to the York community as a whole. The President is
responsible
for the academic and fiscal well being of this University. The
faculty,
students, and staff at York University have, therefore, joined
together
to demand that the Administration end this strike now.
We
have asked President Lorna Marsden to meet with the York community this
Friday
(November 24) in a Question & Answer Period from 12:30 PM to 2:30
PM
in Burton Auditorium. The Q & A will be proceeded by a Solidarity Rally
from
11:30 PM to 12:15 PM in Vari Hall. YUFA is hosting a Solidarity Party
&
Dance Friday night at 8:00 PM at the Steelworkers Hall, 25 Cecil Street
(Spadina
& College).
We
urge all members of the community to support these events. If you can
volunteer
to help out in any way please contact yufa@yorku.ca.
