Alexandra Widmer conducts research in three areas: women’s reproductive health; biomedicine and colonial state formation and the social life of genetics and demography.  Since 2001, she has been captivated by colonial and post colonial Vanuatu, an island nation in the southwestern Pacific, studying how people there -contrary to exoticizing imaginings- are engaged with global systems like colonialism, biomedicine, Christianity and international development.
During her most recent ethnographic research, she worked with the oldest and youngest mothers in a peri-urban village, as well as retired midwives and health educators, to understand how the change in place of birth from village to mission hospital to post colonial hospital has affected women's reproductive health and birthing experiences.
