Welcome
Portuguese is spoken by over 200 million people worldwide, making it the sixth most widely spoken mother tongue on a global level. It is the official language in eight countries. It is the working language of twelve international organizations. It is also the language of several immigrant communities in countries such as the United States, Venezuela, France, Luxemburg and Canada.
The Faculty of Liberal Arts & Professional Studies Portuguese Studies program will introduce you to the language, literature and culture of Portugal and the entire Lusophone world.

Discover the fascinating social and cultural context of the Portuguese-speaking world.
Our challenging courses explore a range of topics, from the variety of the Portuguese language to an examination of several themes in literature, culture and film. Our courses offer an array of options and perspectives; from the early modern period to contemporary postcolonial times.

Sarah Lopes, a student in the Spanish and Portuguese Studies programs, won the LA&PS Outstanding Student Leadership Award
. This award honours student leaders in the Faculty of Liberal Arts & Professional Studies
for their exceptional contributions to an undergraduate student association in the Faculty.
It recognizes outstanding achievement in enhancing the quality of the undergraduate
student experience through leadership, commitment and innovation. Congratulations Sarah!

- The third Ontario Secondary Schools Portuguese Contest took place at York University!

Under the leadership of Co-Chairs Jennie Lopes and Jimmy Steele and the support of dedicated secondary school teachers and university faculty, the event was a great success!
The goal of the event is to promote the Portuguese language and cultures and histories of the Lusophone world among students of Lusophone heritage and students of Portuguese as a Second/Third Language.
Fifty-three students from seven schools in three school boards participated in six different language tests, putting their listening, reading, speaking and writing skills to the test, along with their knowledge of grammar and the cultures of the Lusophone world.
The results are as follows:

- Professor Maria João Dodman presented at the European Book Club
Professor Maria João Dodman presented Blindness by José Saramago for the European Book Club on May 12, 2012 at the Centro de Língua Camões, Toronto.
This initiative was sponsored by the Instituto Camões in Toronto, along with EUNIC (EUROPEAN UNION NATIONAL INSTITUTES FOR CULTURE), the network of the European cultural institutes of Toronto formed by Alliance Française, British Council, Goethe-Institut Toronto, Italian Cultural Institute, and Instituto Camões.
The European Book Club meets periodically in a different cultural institute to discuss a European contemporary book translated into English.
- Professor Maria João Dodman has been elected to serve a two year term as Vice-President of the General Assembly at CASA DOS AÇORES DO ONTARIO.
