Course Levels and Rules

1000-level EN Courses

  • 1000-level EN courses do not count for major credit.

2000-level EN Courses

Gateway Courses

All AK English students must complete 3 gateway courses. The following count as gateway courses:

AK/EN 2010 now AP/EN 2100
AK/EN 2020 now AP/EN 2309 (now EN 3179)
AK/EN 2030 now AP/EN 2140
AP/EN 2120
and either
AK/EN 2075 retired; call the English Department for advice
or
AK/EN 2076 now AP/EN 2020

Specialized Honours B.A. in English:

If you are pursuing a Specialized Honours B.A. in English, you must take 12 credits at the 2000-level; you may take up to an additional 12 credits as well.

Honours B.A. in English, Honours Major/Minor B.A. in English, Honours B.A. with English as a Minor or Honours Double Major B.A. :

If you are pursuing an Honours B.A. in English, with or without a minor, or a Double Major with English as one of the majors, you must take 12 credits at the 2000 level.

B.A. in English:

If you are pursuing a B.A. in English, you must take 12 credits at the 2000 level. In addition, you may count 6 more credits at that level toward your degree.

3000-level EN Rules

Specialized Honours B.A. in English:

If you are pursuing a Specialized Honours in English, you must take 18 credits at the 3000-level; you may count 12 more credits at that level toward your degree.

Honours B.A. in English, Honours Major/Minor B.A. in English, or Honours Double Major B.A.:

If you are pursuing an Honours B.A. in English, with or without a minor or double major, you must take 18 credits at the 3000-level.

Honours B.A. with English as a Minor:

If you are pursuing an Honours B.A. with English as a Minor, you must take 6 credits at the 3000-level; you may count 6 more credits at that level as well.

B.A. in English:

If you are pursuing a B.A. in English, you must take 12 credits at the 3000-level. In addition, you may count 6 more credits at that level toward your degree.

4000-level EN Rules

Specialized Honours B.A. in English:

If you are pursuing a Specialized Honours B.A. in English, you must take 12 credits at the 4000-level. You may count 12 more credits at that level toward your degree.

Honours B.A. in English, Honours Major/Minor B.A. in English, or Honours Double Major B.A.:

If you are pursuing an Honours B.A. in English, with or without a minor or double major, you must take 12 credits at the 4000-level.

Honours B.A. with English as a Minor:

If you are pursuing an Honours B.A. with English as a Minor, you must take 6 credits at the 3000-level; you may take an additional 6 credits as well.

B.A. in English:

You are not eligible to take 4000-level courses.
