Certificates of Proficiency in French Languages

Certificates of French Language Proficiency

Students who are not pursuing a major or minor in French may take language courses with the intent of obtaining a Certificate of French Language Proficiency (basic, intermediate or advanced) or a Certificate of French Language Proficiency in Business (basic, intermediate or advanced).


Certificates of French Language Proficiency

Students who are not pursuing a major or minor in French may take language courses with the intent of obtaining a Certificate of Proficiency in French at one of the following three levels:

Basic level

York University students may earn a Certificate of Basic French Language Proficiency concurrent with fulfillment of the requirements for a bachelor’s degree. This certificate is also open to students who already hold a bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution, and who are admissible according to Faculty and University policies. This certificate is not, however, open to students who are pursuing or who already hold a degree in French studies.

To apply for the certificate, students must have successfully completed 12 credits in French studies as follows:

  • AP/FR 1030 6.0, with a minimum grade of B;
  • AP/FR 1080 6.0, with a minimum grade of B.

Intermediate level

York University students may earn a Certificate of Intermediate French Language Proficiency concurrent with fulfillment of the requirements for a bachelor’s degree. This certificate is also open to students who already hold a bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution, and who are admissible according to Faculty and University policies. This certificate is not, however, open to students who are pursuing or who already hold a degree in French studies.

To apply for the certificate, students must have successfully completed 12 credits in French studies as follows:

  • AP/FR 1080 6.0, with a minimum grade of B;
  • 6 credits with a minimum grade of B in each course chosen from:
    • AP/FR 2081 3.0
    • AP/FR 2082 3.0
    • AP/FR 3081 3.0
    • AP/FR 3082 3.0

Advanced level

York University students may earn a Certificate of Advanced French Language Proficiency concurrent with fulfillment of the requirements for a bachelor’s degree. This certificate is also open to students who already hold a bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution, and who are admissible according to Faculty and University policies. This certificate is not, however, open to students who are pursuing or who already hold a degree in French studies.

To apply for the certificate, students must have successfully completed 12 credits in French studies as follows:

  • AP/FR 2081 3.0 and AP/2082 3.0, with a minimum grade of B;
  • AP/FR 3080 6.0, or AP/FR 3081 3.0 and AP/FR 3082 3.0 with a minimum grade of B.

Note: Students exempted from AP/FR 2081 3.0 and/or AP/FR 2082 3.0 must replace these credits with AP/FR 4090 6.0.


Certificates of French Language Proficiency in Business

Students who are pursuing business or administrative studies at York University may obtain a Certificate of Proficiency in French for Business at one of the following levels:

Basic Language Certificate in Business

York University students may earn a Certificate of Basic French for Business concurrent with fulfillment of the requirements for a bachelor’s degree. This certificate is also open to students who already hold a bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution, and who are admissible according to Faculty and University policies. This certificate is not, however, open to students who are pursuing or who already hold a degree in French studies. To apply for the certificate, students must have successfully completed 12 credits in French studies as follows: 

  • AP/FR 1030 6.0, with a minimum grade of B;
  • AP/FR 1060 6.0, with a minimum grade of B.

Intermediate Language Certificate in Business

York University students may earn a Certificate of Intermediate French for Business concurrent with fulfillment of the requirements for a bachelor’s degree. This certificate is also open to students who already hold a bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution, and who are admissible according to Faculty and University policies. This certificate is not, however, open to students who are pursuing or who already hold a degree in French studies. To apply for the certificate, students must have successfully completed 12 credits in French studies as follows:

  • AP/FR 1060 6.0, with a minimum grade of B;
  • 6 credits with a minimum grade of B in each course chosen from:
    • AP/FR 2060 3.0
    • AP/FR 2061 3.0
    • AP/FR 3060 3.0,

Advanced Language Certificate in Business

York University students may earn a Certificate of Advanced French for Business concurrent with fulfillment of the requirements for a bachelor’s degree. This certificate is also open to students who already hold a bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution, and who are admissible according to Faculty and University policies. This certificate is not, however, open to students who are pursuing or who already hold a degree in French studies. To apply for the certificate, students must have successfully completed 12 credits in French studies as follows:

  • AP/FR 2060 3.0
  • AP/FR 2061 3.0
  • AP/FR 3060 3.0, with a minimum grade of B in each course,

and

  • 3 credits in any subject, taught in French, taken while on exchange with a grade of pass
    or
    3000-level language course taken within the Department of French Studies with a minimum grade of B.

Please Note:

  1. Students must choose either the Certificate of French Language Proficiency OR the Certificate of French Language Proficiency in Business; they cannot customize a certificate by combining courses from both certificates. .
  2. Students who have been exempted from any of the required courses should consult the Undergraduate Program Director.
  3. The higher-level course required for each certificate must be taken in the Department of French Studies, Faculty of Liberal Arts & Professional Studies (Keele Campus). Courses taken at Glendon College, or on a Letter of Permission in the “Explore” Program do not count towards the Certificates. Schulich School of Business students may use three credits earned while on exchange in a French speaking country; the three credits can be in any subject provided the course was taught in French.
