Do all students get assessed?

Students who have no prior knowledge of French (or only limited exposure to core French up to Grade 10 in Ontario System) will automatically be given permission to enroll in Introductory French (AP/FR 1020 6.0).
All other students, i.e. those who have taken core, immersion or extended French beyond Grade 10, or who have experience living in a French-speaking environment, will have their level of French assessed.

Where and how is the assessment done?

The assessment is conducted in the Department of French Studies, N727Ross Bldg, by means of a computerized evaluation which will indicate students' levels of comprehension, understanding of vocabulary and mastery of grammatical forms.

Are students supposed to study for the assessment?

No, it is not recommend to study but the student is welcome to review his/her material already covered in the past if he/she wishes so.The assessment is not a traditional test; no one gets a grade, be it good or poor, and no one fails. The sole purpose of the assessment is to indicate a student's existing knowledge base in French so that he/she will be placed into the course that is best adapted to his/her language needs. In order to optimize your chances to be placed at the correct level the student is advised not to guess but  to answer to the best of your abilities.

How long does the assessment take?

Approximately one hour.

How soon does one get the results?

Immediately!

What's next?

Right after completing the assessment, students obtain permission to enroll in the French course most appropriate for them.
