Program Overview
All students majoring in French Studies will take the following courses:
- AS/FR 1080 6.0 Language & Culture in the French Speaking World
- AS/FR 2081 3.0 Written Communication/Level II AND/OR AS/FR 2082 3.0 Oral Communication/Level II (formerly AS/FR 2080 6.0)
- AS/FR 2100 6.0 Introduction to the Linguistic Study of French
- AS/FR 2200 6.0 Approaches to French Literature: An Introduction
- AS/FR 3080 6.0 French Language and Society: Contemporary Themes ORAS/FR 3081 3.0 Written Communication, Level III AND/ORAS/FR 3082 3.0 Advanced Oral Communication Level II
These courses are offered every year.
- Majors in French Studies are not required to specialize in either Linguistics or Literature. However, degree candidates in French Studies are advised that graduate programmes in French Studies, in Education as well as schools of translation or interpreting may require students to have covered certain literature and/or linguistics courses in their undergraduate studies.
- 3000 and 4000 courses in French linguistics and literature are not all offered every year.
- AS/FR 1020 6.0 Elementary French: Near Beginners and FR 1030 6.0 Intermediate French do not count towards a major in French Studies but after completing them, students can proceed to FR 1080 6.0 and pursue a major in French Studies.
Note: All instruction, discussion, written assignments and examinations in all courses will be in French (except at the beginning of FR 1020 6.0)
