Required Courses
All students majoring in French Studies are required to take the following courses:
- AP/FR 1080 6.0 French Language and Culture
- AP/FR 2081 3.0 Written Communication in French
- AP/FR 2082 3.0 Oral Communication in French
- AP/FR 2100 6.0 Introduction to the Linguistic Study of French
- AP/FR 2200 6.0 Approaches to the Literature: An Introduction
- AP/FR 3081 3.0 Advanced Written Communication in French
or
AP/FR 3082 3.0 Advanced Oral Communication in French
or AP/FR 3080 6.0 French Language and Society
These French Language courses are offered every year.
Majors in French Studies are not required to specialize in either Linguistics or Literature. However, degree candidates in French Studies are advised that graduate programs in French Studies, in Education as well as schools of translation or interpreting may require students to have covered certain literature and/or linguistics courses in their undergraduate studies.
A selection of 3000 and 4000 courses in French linguistics and literature are offered every year.
AP/FR 1020 6.0 Introductory French and AP/FR 1030 6.0 Intermediate French do not count towards a major in French Studies but after completing them, students can proceed to AP/FR 1080 6.0 and pursue a major in French Studies.
