Want to pursue a professional Accounting designation? Want to acquire professional Accounting skills? Get the knowledge and understanding you need to help you succeed with our Professional Accounting Certificate.

A set of specific courses gives you specialized knowledge in several aspects of the field including financial and management accounting, financial statement reporting, personal and corporate income taxation, and auditing. Courses in the certificate may be used towards a professional designation from a variety of Canadian professional bodies including Chartered Accountant (CA), Certified General Accountant (CGA) and Certified Management Accountant (CMA).
Anti-Racist Research and Practice
Anti-Racist Research and Practice
The interdisciplinary certificate in Anti-Racist Research and Practice (CARRP), addresses racism and racial issues in the workplace, schools, healthcare, immigration, law enforcement, media and the expressive arts. Students who complete the certificate and are accepted into the Social Work Program will be eligible to count up to 12 certificate credits towards the social work degree provided these courses are passed at a minimum grade of B.

Develop comprehensive knowledge about how to challenge systemic and institutional racism, with a special focus on addressing issues in the workplace, educational and health care sectors, immigration, law enforcement, media and the expressive arts. Utilizing an applied sociology methodology, you'll acquire a host of valuable skills including policy assessment and program planning, research design and implementation, and critical/analytical skills. The certificate is ideal for individuals who encounter racial or cultural issues as part of their job, as well as for those who are engaged in anti-racism research, education or organizational development.

Recent events including SARS, the Winnipeg flood, and the 2003 power outage illustrate the serious economic and health impacts emergencies can have on our lives. Many of these events are partially or totally preventable through good planning and response. This task is the responsibility of the professional emergency manager.

Emergency Management is an exciting, rapidly expanding and evolving profession, both domestically and internationally. Emergency managers require strong analytic and communication skills to help them establish meaningful dialogue with community representatives and experts in a wide range of fields. Increasingly, emergency managers are called upon to understand shifting social, economic, environmental and infrastructure systems. They need to be able to synthesize large amounts of complex information, and make sound decisions in difficult circumstances.

The Emergency Management Certificate program has been designed in close consultation with key professional organizations to address core skills and knowledge; this gives a balance between research, theory and practice required in this vitally important field.

Geographical Information Systems and Remote Sensing
A Geographic Information System (GIS) is a computer system capable of assembling, storing, manipulating, and displaying information identified according to locations. For example, surveyors may use GIS to maintain and manage field surveys and cartographers may use GIS to create digital maps. Most consumers encounter GIS in market research - the next time a retailer asks for your postal code they're compiling data to see if a they have a large enough geographic/demographic base to support a new store.

The aim of York's Geographic Information Systems Certificate program is to provide you with applied skills in the areas of computer cartography, statistical analysis, geographic information systems, remote sensing and satellite image processing to complement the theoretical and conceptual learning of your Bachelor's degree.

Accountability for decision-making in health service organizations has never been more important. Decision-makers at all levels in health care must be able to make financially sound, viable and defendable decisions. This certificate provides the skills and critical insight necessary to effectively manage health service organizations and contribute in a beneficial way to the health system.

The program is a collaboration between the School of Administrative Studies in the Faculty of Liberal Arts & Professional Studies and the School of Health Policy and Management in the Faculty of Health, bringing together the core strengths from each area to provide an innovative, first-ever certificate that is available nowhere else. The certificate is designed for both those who wish to enter the health sector and those who wish to further themselves in their current industry roles.
Hebrew and Jewish Studies
Hebrew and Jewish Studies
The Certificate in Hebrew and Jewish Studies allows students to explore Judaism and the Jewish people with a view to understanding the diversity and complexity of Jewish history, texts, thought, sociology, fine arts, and more. This 24-credit certificate recognizes student achievement in courses that are cross-disciplinary in nature but which have thematic coherence in the area of Hebrew and Jewish Studies. Students may apply credits toward this certificate which count towards a Bachelor of Arts degree.

The certificate is also a requirement for students enrolled in the concurrent Jewish Teacher Education Program offered jointly between the Faculty of Education and the Faculty of Liberal Arts and Professional Studies.

Sharpen and expand your human resource management (HR) skills while gaining specialized knowledge in a variety of related areas including organizational behaviour, training and development, planning, compensation, occupational health and safety, labour relations and recruitment. Through both in-class lectures as well as optional Internet-based learning, you are exposed to the key issues in HR management that will prepare you for a rewarding and challenging career in the field.

All nine courses (27 credits) in the certificate have been approved by the Human Resources Professionals Association of Ontario (HRPAO), and count as the academic component of the Certified Human Resources Professional (CHRP) designation.

The Cross-Disciplinary Certificate in Indigenous Studies addresses the experiences of Indigenous people including issues in language, history and culture. Practical Ethics is an exciting new area of study and research. The area of practical ethics provides the opportunity to apply ethical concepts and principles to contemporary social issues. Our professors, who come from a variety of backgrounds including business and law, are conducting research in such areas as conflicting or competing values in environmental development projects; international intervention and refugee assistance; and immigration and racial profiling.

Completion of the Practical Ethics Certificate will enable you to address questions of applied ethics and public policy in the fields of anthropology, economics, humanities, philosophy, political science, social science and sociology.

This reflects the fact that the public sector employs individuals from diverse professional backgrounds, but their progress through the ranks typically requires an understanding of the legal and administrative aspects of government.

Upon completion of the certificate, students will:

- have a working knowledge of public administration and its hierarchy
- have an understanding of the role of law within government
- be familiar with the legal as well as administrative workings of government
- be able to analyze the relationship between law, politics and public administration in a critical manner.

The certificate in Refugee and Migration Studies is a general, interdisciplinary certificate, addressing issues concerning ethnic communities, gender, racism, migration, policy, cultural identity and international relations, augmenting your work in the field or professional life. The Creative Advertising program focuses on the strategic planning and creation of advertising and marketing communications for both print and broadcast. Attention is paid to the principles of advertising as they are applied across a broad spectrum of disciplines within the expanding field of advertising and marketing communications. Particular emphasis is placed on creative concept development and the writing of persuasive advertising copy.

Seneca College and York University offer a joint program which enables students to earn a Seneca diploma in Journalism - Broadcast and a York University Bachelor of Arts degree.

This program offers pre-professional training in radio, television and new media journalism skills. The aim of the program is to give students a high degree of competency and knowledge, in order to be able to obtain entry-level positions in a broad spectrum of radio and television information programming. The program is recommended for students with a great desire for storytelling and disseminating information about news, public affairs, entertainment and sports.
