The Department of Geography provides access to a wide range of computing, research and instructional facilities to faculty, graduate and undergraduate students.

Research and Teaching Laboratories

Water & Soil Chemistry Laboratory

105 Lumbers Building

The Main laboratory consists of a series of interconnected rooms and is located on the second floor of farquharson. The lab is primarily used for chemical analysis of vegetation, soil and water samples and storage. The physical and chemical laboratory contains a full range of equipment for water, plant tissue and soil analyses including an atomic absorption spectrophotometer, a gas chromatograph, and a Technicon autoanalyzer.

The main lab is under the full-time supervision by (Jackson Langat) who is responsible for the maintenance of equipment ordering supplies and supervision of students in the lab as well as assisting faculty in work.

The fluvial geomorphology lab consists of an 8 metre flume, an Acoustic Doppler Velocimeter, two Marsh McBirney electromagnetic current meters, and a range of other equipment for flume and sediment transport measurement.

Hydrology Laboratory

The micro-climatological and hydrological laboratories are equipped for in-lab experiments, instrument calibration and the construction of field apparatus. Hydrological equipment includes soil pressure plates, potentiometric water level recorders, infiltrometer rings, current meters, snow samplers, ice augers and dataloggers.

Field Work Preparation Lab

This work space is available for all graduate students and faculty involved in field work, and can be used as a space for construction and organization of field equipment. The laboratory provides ready access to Curtis Lecture Hall elevators and the Scott Library loading docks.

Two growth chambers are available for specified temperature and light regime experiments.

Environmental sensors are available to measure boundary layer and subsurface flow of energy, water, and the radiative transfer of energy at the earth's surface.

Computing Facilites

Geoinformatics Research Laboratory

This facility is available to meet the computing needs of graduate students and faculty in the fields of remote sensing, GIS and advanced spatially-based environmental modeling and analysis. Several workstations provide access to a wide range of software applications, focusing primarily on these fields. Access to the facility is through an account on the GISPC server. In addition to computing, the facility provides space for research and talks related to remote sensing and GIS.

The Geoinformatics Teaching Laboratory provides space for GIS, Remote sensing and statistical related instruction in the Department. Thirty PC workstations are available with access to a full range of Geographic software, including statistics, GIS, Remote Sensing, decision support, as well as the standard suite of key software packages running under Windows 7. The laboratory also houses a digitizing table, a scanner and both color and black and white laser printers. Access to the laboratory is provided through a FAS account for students enrolled in related York Geography courses.

CFI Geoinformatics Research Laboratory

Computer Science Building 0018

This facility provides access to machines used in high end computing applications such as remote sensing, GIS and analytical modeling for York Geography faculty, and graduate students. The laboratory houses 14 workstations with access to a wide array of advanced analytical software. Also available are a colour plotter, colour and black and white laser printers, and a digital scanner. Geomatics or GISPC server accounts are required in order to access the workstations in this facility.

Faculty/Graduate Computing Facility

This space is utilized by Geography faculty and graduate students to fulfill basic computing requirements. Access to computer workstations running Windows and Microsoft XP as well as two black and white laser printers and a digital scanner is provided. Users must have a YorkArts server account managed by the Academic Technology Support Group in order to use the machines in this facility.
