For AY 2004-5, almost all first year Foundations faculty in
Social Science have agreed to incorporate the two on-line
tutorials (each which includes a self-testing quiz) into the
required assignments for their courses. Both now available
at http://www.yorku.ca/fcap/onlinetutorials.html
The ACADEMIC INTEGRITY TUTORIAL is designed to help
students learn about plagiarism and what they can do to avoid
it.
The LIBRARY RESEARCH ROADMAP TUTORIAL leads students
through the basic steps of the research process in preparation
for writing an essay in the social sciences.
These on-line tutorials are excellent, support the goals of
the skill- building part of the Foundations program, and require
almost no work on the part of TAs or faculty.
Many Humanities instructors have also agreed to use these
tutorials in their first year courses so in the coming years,
those of you teaching second year courses will be able to
assume students have completed them. In fact, the reporting
software described below will allow you to generate a list
of those students in your class who have not done the tutorials.
For this year, second year instructors might wish to include
these tutorials in their courses, at least as a recommendation,
especially the one on Academic Integrity given problems with
cheating and plagiarism.
For your information, there is a new on-line tutorial available
on 'Pre-writing Strategies'. It is also posted at the FCAP
website. Any feedback on this tutorial is most welcome.
TRACKING STUDENT COMPLETION
There are two ways that you can track student completion of
these tutorials.
a) Students can print out a dated report with their grade
which they can hand in to their tutorial leader to demonstrate
completion of the tutorials. See 'Handout for Students' on
the on-line tutorials below.
b)The Centre for Support of Teaching has set up a website
for on-line tutorials http://www.yorku.ca/tutorial.
This site includes the three tutorials for students who are
not completing them as part of a Foundations requirement.
It also has a link 'Getting Statistics and Reports'. When
you click on this page, you will see the many different kinds
of reports you can generate about student use of the tutorials.
For example, the number of times students tried to do the
tutorial, or those who completed by a certain date etc. You
will need to contact the quiz administrator at the Centre
for Support of Teaching cst@yorku.ca
to get set up to generate such reports.
Y-QUIZ WRITER
This tool, available in Fall 2004, will allow you to develop
your own on-line quizzes which will be graded automatically
and for which you will be able to generate results in various
forms. More information will be forthcoming.
