The
Centre for the Support of Teaching coordinates a broad range
of programmes and strategies which promote reflective practice
and scholarly dialogue on teaching and learning among faculty
and graduate students at York University. It provides advocacy
for excellence and innovation in teaching, and assists in
improving student learning.
Although
at this time the CST does not offer programmes specifically
designed for the Foundations courses, much of what it provides
is useful.
Of
particular help to faculty is the Course Design Institute,
and for new faculty the NFTY, a teaching development program
designed to increase understanding of teaching and learning
process, expand repertories of teaching and assessment methods,
and promote informed classroom practice. Faculty members and
TAs may contact Olivia Petrie, Associate Director, at any
time to discuss specific teaching and learning issues individually.
For
Teaching Assistants, the CST sponsors a TA Day every September
which offers sessions for both first-time and experienced
TAs, TA workshops offered through the fall and winter terms,
a Teaching Practicum which is a self-directed programme of
professional development in university teaching and learning,
and UTAL 5000, a graduate course on University Teaching and
Learning.
Check
out “Ideas About Teaching”on the CST website which includes
electronic resources on course development, delivery and evaluation,
teaching critical thinking, problem based and cooperative
learning, teaching with technology, TA teaching tools, and
association journals and listservs.
The
CST also publishes Core: York's Newsletter on University
Teaching, Bulletins from the Senate Committee on Teaching
and Learning [SCOTL], a Teaching Documentation Guide (SCOTL),
and a Teaching Evaluation Guide (SCOTL).
