The Reference Department and its Information Literacy Program offers many services to support the Foundations Programme.

FOR STUDENTS

1. REFERENCE SERVICE

The reference librarians will deal with any questions related to research from the most general, "how do I start finding information on.." to specific questions dealing with particular topics. They will also help students identify and work with appropriate data bases.

2. VIRTUAL REFERENCE DESK

Students can also pose reference questions online to a Virtual Librarian in real time [from 11 am-10pm M-TH and 11am-5pm F]. On the library home page, click on "Ask a Librarian: Chat Reference". When this service is closed, it is possible for students to click on email and send a query this way.

3. SCOTT RESEARCH SEMINARS

In September, the library offers integrated orientation sessions on the library, doing research and using the web. No registration is required. To find the dates, click on this link: www.library.yorku.ca/ccm/Home/ResearchAndInstruction/AttendLibraryWorkshops.htm

4. THE LIBRARY'S WEBSITE

The library website has some of the useful training materials available to students. Under "Help with Research" on the library's home page, click on "Library Instruction". Here students will find a variety of online tutorials including: How to Find Stuff, Library Research Roadmap, Finding Articles (and searching periodical indexes), Guide to Book Reviews, Subject Pathfinders (for specific disciplines) and a Guide to Library Jargon.

5. WORD PROCESSING IN THE LIBRARY

At the moment, many of the computers on the second floor of the Scott Library have word processing capabailities. The library is moving to make this program available on all computers so students will be able to integrate the research and writing process. When students use the library computers for this purpose, they can email their files to themselves or print them. Students will require their acadlabs login information in order to access these workstations.

FOR FOUNDATIONS COURSES

The Reference Department offers in-course instruction either through lectures or tutorial workshops. In their effort to cope with growing demand, the Reference Department encourages you to consider the guest lecture format rather than the multiple in-library tutorials. Note that the library needs at least two weeks notice and is often booked up. Contact Lisa Sloniowski at x20072 (lisasl@yorku.ca) or use the on-line booking form to request a class.
This form can be found via the library's webpage for faculty at :
www.library.yorku.ca/ccm/Home/infolit/faculty.htm

If you want to design a specific assignment which involves library research, the reference librarians will offer suggestions and direction. You might also check the web pages on information literacy at www.library.yorku.ca/ccm/Home/infolit/faculty.htm.

Specifically, a site offering suggestions in regard to library research assignments is available at
www.library.yorku.ca/ccm/ScottReference/services/assignments.htm.
