Streams for students entering in 2007 - 2008

Important Note: Students entering the programme in 2007-2008 must follow the following degree requirements listed below. Any student from 2005-2006 or earlier may decide to switch BOTH of their streams to these new streams with the approval of the coordinator.

Note: For purposes of meeting program requirements, all foundations courses will count as six credits towards the major

Program Core

All major degree candidates must complete the program core, and at least three credits in an approved statistics course as part of their stream requirement. Please refer to stream requirements listed below.

  • AS/ECON 1000 3.00 Introduction to Microeconomics;
  • AS/ECON 1010 3.00 Introduction to Macroeconomics;
  • AS/CSE 1520 3.00 Computer Use: Fundamentals or AS/MATH 1581 3.00 Business Mathematics I;
  • AS/SOSC 1340 3.00 Introduction to Business and Society;
  • AS/SOSC 2340 9.00 Foundations of Business and Society.

Note: Statistics courses are offered in many of the streams and many of these courses have course credit exclusions. Check course descriptions carefully for course credit exclusions to avoid duplicating course work.

Streams

Students must choose two of the streams listed below.

 

1. The Firm — Option A: Microeconomic Analysis

Note: Prerequisites for courses must be met. Check course descriptions carefully for prerequisite requirements.

Students must complete 18 credits (24 for the Honours BA) from either Option A or Option B.

Option A – Microeconomic Analysis*

For the Honours program: students must include at least six credits chosen from:

AS/ECON 4130 3.00 Introduction to Game Theory in Economics,
AS/ECON 4210 3.00 Econometrics,
AS/ECON 4220 3.00 Econometric Theory, or
AS/ECON 4350 3.00 Advanced Topics in Industrial Organization.

* Students may not combine this Stream Option with Option A in The Macroeconomy Stream .

** Students who take this course as part of the Macro-Economy Stream should replace it with another course chosen from the listed course options at the 2000 or 3000 level.

1. The Firm — Option B: Organizational Analysis

Note: Prerequisites for courses must be met. Check course descriptions carefully for prerequisite requirements.

Students must complete 18 credits (24 for the Honours BA) from either Option A or Option B.

Option B – Organizational Analysis

For the Honours program: students must include at least six credits chosen from:

AS/ECON 4130 3.00 Introduction to Game Theory in Economics,

AS/SOSC 4041 6.00 Alternative Economic Firms and Arrangements,
AS/SOSC 4210 6.00 Collective Bargaining Simulation, or
AK/ADMS 4010 3.00 Organization and Administrative Theory.

* Students who take this course as part of the Macro-Economy Stream should replace it with another course chosen from the listed course options at the 3000 level.

2. The Macroeconomy — Option A: Macroeconomic Analysis

Note: Prerequisites for courses must be met. Check course descriptions carefully for prerequisite requirements.

Students must complete 18 credits (24 for the Honours BA) from either Option A or Option B.

Option A – Macroeconomic Analysis*

For the Honours program: students must include at least six credits chosen from:

AS/ECON 4070 3.00 Public Finance I,
AS/ECON 4080 3.00 Public Finance II,
AS/ECON 4129 3.00 International Trade Policy and Economic Integration,
AS/ECON 4190 3.00 International Trade II, or
AS/ECON 4200 3.00 International Monetary Economics.

* Students may not combine this Stream Option with Option A in The Firm Stream.

**Students who take this course as part of the Firm Stream should replace it with another course chosen from the listed course options at the 2000 or 3000 level.

2. The Macroeconomy — Option B: Public Policy Analysis

Note: Prerequisites for courses must be met. Check course descriptions carefully for prerequisite requirements.

Students must complete 18 credits (24 for the Honours BA) from either Option A or Option B.

Option B – Public Policy Analysis

For the Honours program: students must include at least six credits chosen from:

3. The Global Economy

For the Honours program: students must include at least six credits chosen from:

4. The Social Economy

For the Honours program: students must include at least six credits chosen from:

AS/SOCI 4200 6.00 Sociology of Conflict and Co-operation.
AS/SOSC 3040 6.0 Corporate Social Responsibility

5. Labour

For the Honours program: students must include at least six credits chosen from:AS/SOSC 4041 6.00 Alternative Economic Firms and Arrangements,

AS/SOSC 4210 6.00 Collective Bargaining Simulation,
AS/SOSC 4240 6.00 Labour Studies Placement, or
AS/SOSC 4250 6.00 Advanced Topics in Labour Studies.

6. Professions, Occupations and Social Change

For the Honours program: students must include at least six credits chosen from:

10. Business Ethics & Corporate Social Responsibility

For the Honours program: students must include at least six credits chosen from:

AS/AK/PHIL 4150 3.00 Professional Ethics,
AS/PHIL 4160 3.00 Topics in Business Ethics, or
AS/SOSC 4043 6.00 Corporate Governance and Business Law.
AS/SOSC 4044 6.00 Ethics and Economics

  Honours BA Program (72 credits)

Note: Faculty of Liberal Arts & Professional Studies legislation requires that, in order to obtain an Honours BA (120 credits), students must take a total of at least 18 credits at the 4000 level.

*Note: With permission of the Co-ordinator, students may substitute AS/SOSC 4041 6.0 (Alternative Economic Firms and Arrangements), AS/SOSC 4042 6.0 (Research in the Community) or AS/SOSC 4043 (Corporate Governance and Business Law in Comparative Perspective) or AS/SOSC 4044 6.0 (Ethics and Economic) for AS/SOSC 4040 6.0.

BA Program (54 credits)

Note: Faculty of Liberal Arts & Professional Studies legislation requires that in order to obtain a BA (90 credits degree), students must take a total of at least 18 credits at the 3000 level.

Note: The Faculty of Liberal Arts & Professional Studies residence requirement will be met by successfully completing at least 50 per cent of the major requirements of each of the two streams (with the exception of the Environment stream) in the Faculty of Liberal Arts & Professional Studies.
