J.J. McMurtry's research and teaching focuses on the theory and practice of alternative social, political, and economic forms. His teaching focuses on the theory and practice of the Social Economy nationally and internationally as well as on social and economic theory.
His research is focused on the theory and practice of the Social Economy in Canada as well as the social and political forms which support this development. Two recent books - Living Economics: Canadian Perspectives on the Social Economy, Co-operatives and Community Economic Development (2010) and Co-operatives in a Global Economy (2009) - capture some of this research.
He is currently working on SSHRC funded projects examining the co-operative difference in alternative energy nationally and internationally, the Social Economy as a green employer, and on the roll of small producer organizations in Fair Trade. Professor McMurtry is active in a number of community, economic and political organizations.
