Academic Advising

Whether you are a newly admitted student to the Faculty of Liberal Arts & Professional Studies or a continuing student currently pursuing your studies, academic advising is an important activity that supports your engagement and success at York University. Student Academic Advising Services is a place that can help you get the information and guidance you need to succeed.

Please remember that advising is a shared relationship between you and the advisor, whether the advisor is from Student Academic Advising Services, an individual departmental or program office or one of the Faculty-affiliated Colleges. Advisors can help by clarifying policies and regulations or by presenting various options. Ultimately, however, the student must accept responsibility for decisions regarding their academic program.

Newly Admitted Students

Advising for newly admitted students is provided by Student Academic Advising Services and includes:

  • orientation to the University and the Faculty of Liberal Arts & Professional Studies
  • advice on how to choose a major,
  • overview of degree programs and requirements
  • introduction to enrolment and registration procedures (including course selection)
  • an overview of advising services available to students.

I've Been Admitted (Next Steps)

Step 1 - Accept Your Offer of Admission

Please confirm your decision to attend York University on line at http://www.yorku.ca/myfile. The Office of Admissions reserves the right to withdraw your offer of admission if you have not confirmed your acceptance and booked your appointment by the deadline indicated in your letter.

Step 2 - Book Your Enrolment Appointment

Course enrolment takes place on a first-come, first-served basis. So, it is in your interest to arrange for an enrolment appointment as soon as possible. If you live in central Ontario, you are strongly encouraged to come to campus for an in-person appointment. If you reside outside of the central Ontario region and/or are unable to come to campus to enrol, please book an alternate (i.e. via email correspondence) appointment online at www.yorku.ca/myfile (the system will automatically book you an alternate enrolment appointment based on your home address). Or, contact us at 416 736 5011 or laps@yorku.ca

Attention Transfer Students: If you are transferring to York from another post-secondary institution (e.g. college or university), you may be eligible for transfer credit. However, the assessment of your transfer credit (e.g. number of credits granted, course substitutions) will not take place until you book your advising appointment. Your assessment will be explained to you at your advising appointment prior to enrolling in courses.

Step 3 - Prepare For Your Appointment

    1. If you don't know what you want to major in or would like to consider your options, you should browse our programs.
    2. Sign up for "Passport York" — York University's primary method of online authentication — so you can enrol in your courses when you attend your appointment.

Step 4 - Attend Your Appointment

If you are coming to campus for your enrolment/advising appointment, follow the directions provided in your email appointment confirmation.

Step 5 - Review and Pay Enrolment Deposit

Review the information and presentation provided at your enrolment appointment and don't forget to pay your enrolment deposit within five days of enrolling in your courses. This will secure your space in your courses.

Step 6 - Be on the lookout for information regarding Orientation

York University's colleges organize orientation events at the beginning of each term to help new students make a smooth transitiion to York. Be on the look out for details from your college.

Continuing Students

Most continuing Liberal Arts & Professional Studies (LAPS) students who contact Student Academic Advising Services have questions about academic issues. Many want to book an appointment with an academic advisor to get the answers they're looking for. But, it is often easy to get the answers you need without having to book an advising appointment.

Here are the most common questions we receive from students and the answers you need to know:

How do I change my major?

A: If you know the program you would like to change to, you can find all the information about how to make the change, here: www.registrar.yorku.ca/program/change/

If you are still searching for a new program in LA&PS, check out the possibilities, here: www.yorku.ca/laps/futurestudents/programs_list.asp

How do I know what courses to take next year?

A: All LAPS course and program requirements are found, here: www.yorku.ca/laps/futurestudents/undergrad_programs.asp

If you want to find out if you're on track for graduation, visit here.

I had extenuating circumstances that impacted my academic performance this year. How do I file a petition for special consideration?

A: You'll find all the information you need about how to file a petition, here: www.yorku.ca/laps/council/students/petitions.html

Where should I go if I have a question about a grade I received?

A: You should contact the department offering the course. You'll also find helpful information about grades (e.g. repeating courses, grade reappraisals), here:www.yorku.ca/laps/students/grading.html

What if I still have questions?

A: Most student queries can be answered using the following online tools:

I still need to meet with an academic advisor. How do I book an appointment?

A: If your question is about course requirements in your major or minor, you should contact that school or program office. You will find contact information, here: www.yorku.ca/laps/schools/

If, on the other hand, you have questions about general degree requirements beyond your major/minor (e.g. general education requirements) you should book an appointment with Student Academic Advising Services (SAAS). Advising appointments are not available on the phone or in person. You must book online.

IMPORTANT NOTES ABOUT ADVISING APPOINTMENTS

Appointments in SAAS are limited and book up very quickly. Appointment slots are usually made available around noon on Tuesday for the following week. If there are no slots available when you try to book, you are invited to check again the following Tuesday at noon.

As a student, it is important for you to recognize your responsibility to familiarize yourself with the academic policies, procedures and requirements published each year in the undergraduate calendar It is also important for you to continually review your academic choices and monitor your progress toward graduation.

Former Faculty of Arts and Atkinson Faculty students who were last enrolled prior to 2009 should review our Grandparenting FAQs.

In order for your advisor to give you the best service possible, here are the things that we ask of you:

  • Be on time. We reserve the right to cancel the appointment if you are late. We also reserve the right to restrict further access to advising appointments if you do not attend your appointment without cancelling.
  • If it's impossible to keep a scheduled appointment, notify the office as soon as possible so another student can be helped during that time.
  • Remember that your appointment time is limited. The better prepared you come, the more helpful your appointment will be. Prepare your questions in advance.
  • Before you come, learn what you can on your own first from the web (e.g. calendar, program requirements) and other resources around campus.
  • Please come by yourself. This is your opportunity to speak about your questions and concerns. If your friends have questions, ask them to book their own appointment.
  • Follow through on options and/or actions identified during each advising session.
  • Be ready to listen and be patient. Your advisor may need to confer with others. Take notes so you can refer to them later.
  • Please demonstrate good manners and appropriate behaviour.

Most students who have been admitted to York on a Non-degree basis are visiting students from another university or they have already have a degree and are interested in taking courses for a variety of reasons beyond graduation.

Some Non-degree students are pursuing a certificate or diploma program. Students with questions regarding certificate or diploma program requirements are best advised by the unit offering the program. Contact information is available on the linked page above.

Other Non-degree students are taking courses beyond graduation with the goal of applying to graduate studies or some sort of professional designation. Students in this situation are encouraged to contact their target program office or institution for information regarding admission and course requirements.

Some non-degree students are visiting from another university, taking courses on a letter of permission. If students in this situation have questions regarding course selection, they are encouraged to contact their home institution.
