Sara has a B.A. in International Studies from the University of Washington and an M.A. in Geography from the University of British Columbia. She began her Ph.D. in Geography at York University in 2009, after lecturing at the Metropolitan State University of Denver and the National University of Mongolia. Her research interests include political geography, geographies of natural resources, cultural geography, and creative methods. Sara’s dissertation examines the Oyu Tolgoi copper-gold mine in Mongolia’s Gobi Desert and how contestations over environmental impacts challenge promises of the mine as a nation-building project. A Canadian Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council doctoral fellowship, a Field Research Fellowship from the American Center for Mongolian Studies and the Henry Luce Foundation, and York University provided funding for Sara’s dissertation.
