The Elia Chair provides a modest fund from its annual budget to meet research and travel needs of York faculty and graduate students engaged in activities related to Italian-Canadian studies. This fund is administered by a subcommittee of the Academic Advisory Committee to the Chair in conjunction with the Office of Research Services.
The Elia Research Fund supports small-scale research projects with specific needs and helps defray the cost of travel where a significant contribution to Italian-Canadian studies will be made and the prestige of the university enhanced. Limited resources do not allow support for major projects. Normally, awards are less than $8000 and only one grant per year will be awarded to a candidate.
Activities Eligible for Support
Research in any discipline (or of an interdisciplinary nature) related to Italian-Canadian studies is eligible for funding. Priority will be given to small-scale research projects, or specific investigations within larger efforts, which would not be conducted or brought to completion without Elia Chair funding.
Travel expenses to enable faculty and graduate students to meet clearly defined research objectives are eligible for support, particularly where alternate sources are not readily available. Because funds are limited, applicants are encouraged to seek other sources of travel support in cases where Elia Chair research funding is also being sought.
Travel to conferences will be funded in cases where a scholarly paper will be presented. Accommodation expenses will not normally be considered.
York University/University of Calabria Exchange expenses will be considered for support. As well as normal research and travel costs, travel expenses which enable York faculty or graduate students to teach within the Exchange programme are also eligible.
Deadlines
There are two deadlines for applications; March 1st and November 1st. If the deadline date falls on a Saturday, Sunday, or statutory holiday; applications will be accepted on the next working day. Applications received after the deadline will be sent to committee marked late.
A report on the project and money spent must be provided to the Chair within 90 days of the end of the project.
