Welcome to McLaughlin College!!! But what is McLaughlin College, and why are you part of it?
McLaughlin's theme is public policy, and you are a
member of McLaughlin either because your degree
program is suppored by this College, or because
you are a student in Tatham Hall, our residence. The
programs supported by McLaughlin are Sociology, Political Science, Criminology, Law and Society, Public
Policy & Administration, Global Political Studies, and
Labour Studies. (Some students turn out to be from
other departments, and we love the variety.)
During the next few months, I will be in touch with each of you to invite you to
College events, such as our renowned "brain food" lunch talk series, where you
will be treated to free lunch and have the opportunity to meet College students
and Fellows, and hear short talks on current issues by a variety of engaging and
controversial speakers. There will be lots of time for questions, answers, and
heated debates.
A College is a home away from home. There is an active student club for each
of the programs supported by the College, and there are a number of other
College-affiliated clubs listed in this handbook. We sponsor seminars and conferences where you can get to know innovative thinkers from around the world.
I recommend that you join several student clubs. Active, engaged students are
the happiest and get the highest grades. (During my first two years of university, I belonged to about 15 student clubs. I had fun! I cut back to about 5 clubs
in my last two years to focus more on grades -- a good strategy.) Get involved
within your McLaughlin community or student council.
Please come up to McLaughlin 220, our reception area on the second floor, and
get to know our friendly staff - Lilian, Shakira, Vicky and Lorraine. Your key to
academic success at York is Terry Conlin, our Academic Advisor - he's awesome! You're always welcome to drop in and see me.
This is my sixth year as Master, or academic head of the College. I started
teaching at York in 1985, after 4 years working in the Alberta public service. I
was an undergraduate poli sci student at the University of Alberta and Bishop's
University. I did my graduate work studying judicial behavior at the University of Toronto. Then I spent two years working and traveling in New Zealand,
Australia, Malaysia, Thailand, Burma, India, Nepal, Afghanistan, Iran, Turkey,
Greece, and much of Europe. My hobbies are mountain climbing and skiing. I
play the piano and bagpipes (be warned). I'm married with three children, aged
9, 17 and 19, so please sympathize when you see me looking frazzled!
I wish you a successful and fulfilling year! As York's Latin motto enjoins us,
Tentanda Via, The Way Must Be Tried. Welcome, good luck and I look forward to
getting to know you!
