York U. Osgoode Hall Law School Students Get Lion's Share of Blake, Cassels & Graydon LLP National Scholarship Program -- $666,000 in Aid to Help Deflate Debt

TORONTO, January 25, 2000 -- While law students tackle rigorous and relentless academic challenges, they also often find themselves facing another foe -- debt. To help ease that debt, the law firm of Blake, Cassels & Graydon LLP has donated $333,000 to York University's Osgoode Hall Law School in support of outstanding students in financial need. The donation was matched by the provincial government as part of the Ontario Student Opportunity Trust Fund, yielding $666,000 for student awards.

The donation is part of Blakes' national scholarship program, announced yesterday, involving 13 Canadian law schools. The firm's generous support of Osgoode is one of the two largest gifts bestowed upon law schools across the country. It is designed to assist exceptional and deserving students finance their legal education.

"The feedback we've been getting from our articling and prospective students is that the cost of financing their education is increasing exponentially," said Managing Partner Jim Christie. "Students are juggling expenses, and graduates are entering the workforce with significant debt."

The new scholarships will be officially announced at a reception at the Royal Ontario Museum on Wed., Jan. 26, 6:30 p.m. Considered one of Osgoode Hall Law School's premier honours, The Blake, Cassels & Graydon LLP Awards will be distributed annually to three students. The Blakes Scholars, who will be announced in the fall, will be selected on the basis of academic achievement ó they must be in the top 20 per cent of their class after first year ó and on the basis of financial need. The award will be renewable to recipients who maintain their academic standing and continue to demonstrate financial need after second year. One of the three awards in each year may be granted to a student in the combined LLB/MBA program.

"Blakes' gift will go a long way to ensuring our best students receive the financial support they need and deserve to concentrate fully on their studies," said Osgoode Dean Peter Hogg. "Blakes takes the training and support of its students very seriously," he said. "We shouldn't be surprised. The same foresight, sensitivity and commitment represented in their outstanding support of our school marks Blake, Cassels & Graydon LLP as a leader in business and in our community."

"We draw heavily from Osgoode in our hiring of articling students and recruitment of first year associates. Almost one quarter of our firm is from this campus. It's in our best interest and that of Osgoode students for us to develop a program that would assist them in completing their education without interruption or added anxiety,"said Mary Jackson, Director of Legal Personnel at Blakes.
