YORK UNIVERSITY HOSTS REVOLUTION GIRL-STYLE: YOUNG WOMEN SPEAK OUT

TORONTO, June 10, 1996: What do young women think about such issues as feminism, body image and the rights of youth?

These will be some of the issues under discussion on Sunday, June 16, 1996, as York University's Centre for Feminist Research hosts Revolution Girl-Style: Young Women Speak Out, 9:00 a.m. - 9:00 p.m., in Vari Lecture Hall A.

The issues to be discussed include: Black Women Confronting Feminism; Identity from the Margins -- Bi-phobia; Heterosexism in High School; Fear for the Body and Mind -- Dating/Relationships; Negotiating an Able-bodied Campus; Ageism and the Rights of Youth; True Confessions of Two Sexual Health Peer Educators; This is your Wake-up Call -- Taking Responsibility for Womanhood; Young Women Encountering the `F' Word; Claiming Space through Activism; Interpreting the Backlash -- Resisting Media Representations of Women; Fighting Homophobia in the Classroom; Assaulting Harassment; Consciousness through Culture -- Young Women's Music, Art Writing; Reclaiming Female Body Image; Destroying Purdah -- Resistance as a Source of Strength; Taking Responsibility for Race/Class Privilege; Distributing Dissent -- Alternative Expressions of Skateboarding and 'Zines; After Beijing -- Organizing Locally to Help Youth Globally; and Young Women on Celluloid.

"The Centre for Feminist Research is delighted to be hosting an event where young women's voices have an opportunity to be heard," says Centre director Nancy Mandell. "They are the new face of tomorrow's feminism. This event is an effort to make connections between the concerns of young women in Canada and those all over the world."

The day will include films, panels, music and a feminist cabaret. The daytime session is free. There is a $10 admission fee for the evening session (beginning 6:00 p.m. in Founders Dining Hall), which will include dinner. York University is located at 4700 Keele St. (Keele St. and Steeles Ave.) in North York.
