Former Imperial Oil CEO, York U. Chancellor Arden Haynes to receive honorary degree from York U. tomorrow

TORONTO, June 20, 2000 -- Arden Haynes, York University's ninth Chancellor (1994 to1998) and a former chair and chief executive Officer of Imperial Oil (Canada) Limited, will receive an honorary Doctor of Laws degree from York University Wed., June 21.

Haynes has played a vital role in the economic life of Canada. He has participated in many organizations designed to improve communications between business, government, and the people of Canada, including a stint as chair of the Prime Minister's Advisory Committee on the business/government executive exchange program. He has led a broad range of charitable, community and educational groups and activities -- chief among them Diabetes Canada for whom he worked tirelessly as fundraising chair from 1982 to 1987. Haynes was named an Officer of the Order of Canada in 1989.

Haynes will receive his honorary Doctor of Laws degree and address convocation Wed., June 21, 10 a.m., at York's Keele Campus, in the convocation tent, located east of the Centre for Film and Theatre, 4700 Keele St.
