AS CNE HOSTS WELCOME ITALIA EXHIBIT, YORK UNIVERSITY EXPERTS COMMENT ON ITALIAN POLITICS, CULTURE AND ART

TORONTO, August 20, 1997 -- For the next two weeks, thousands of people will flock to the Canadian National Exhibition's Welcome Italia exhibit, which features booths and attractions celebrating Italian culture and history, including a booth from York University's Italian Studies program. Interest in Italy and the Italian contribution to Canada is riding high in the wake of the 500th anniversary of Giovanni Caboto's landing in Canada.

The following York University professors are available to provide expert commentary on Italian culture, politics, immigration, art, and history:

  • Elio Costa is a professor in the Department of Languages, Literature and Linguistics who is available to talk about many aspects of contemporary Italy, such as its culture, politics and society. He specializes in contemporary Italian cinema and medieval Italian literature. Prof. Costa is originally from Italy and speaks Italian. He can be reached at his office at (416) 736-2100, ext. 66924.

  • Franc Sturino is a history professor at York and an expert on the Italian immigrant community in Canada. He has written two books on Italian immigration to North America: Arrangiarsi: The Italian Immigration Experience in Canada, and Forging the Chain. Prof. Sturino teaches a course in Italian history, and can also discuss Italian politics (especially Northern separatism), migration into Italy, and Italian regionalism.   • Barbara Dodge is Associate Dean in the Faculty of Fine Arts, and a specialist in late medieval and Renaissance Italian art and architecture, particularly the representation of women. She developed and taught York's art history courses in Florence, Italy and is a former curator at the National Gallery of Art in Washington, D.C. She can speak about Italy's cultural history and Italian art and architecture, and can be reached at her office at (416) 736-2100, ext. 77348, or by email at bdodge@yorku.ca.

  • Mauro Buccheri teaches in the Department of Languages, Literature and Linguistics. He specializes in contemporary and 20th century Italian literature, but can also speak about a range of topics, including Italian culture, politics, philosophy and history. During the 1997-98 school year, Prof. Buccheri will also be teaching a course about Italian-Canadian literature.   • Carmela Canzonieri is a professor in York's Faculty of Environmental Studies. She is originally from Italy, speaks Italian, and has a degree in architecture from the University of Rome. She is available to talk about environmental issues in Italy, Italian architecture, Italian cities, and rural landscapes. Her research and teaching focuses on rural and urban landscapes, land ethics, ecological design and environmental planning, and she has done research on these topics in Italy.
