Calling All Friends and Alumni of York U. -- 150,000 Strong; York U. Celebrates 40 Years with Homecoming Extravaganza: 17 Events Including York Yeomen Vs. Western Mustangs, 54-40 Concert, Literary Readings

TORONTO, September 15, 1999 -- York University, now celebrating its 40th anniversary, is holding its annual Homecoming celebrations Sept. 23 - 26, 1999. Highlights include:

  • York Yeomen vs. Western Mustangs, Sat., Sept. 25, 2 p.m. kickoff, York Stadium. Gates open at noon for a pre-game warm-up party featuring contests and prizes, face painting, clowns, live entertainment, etc. (Admission: $5 for adults, $3 for non-York students/seniors, free for children under 12 and York students with ID). For tickets and information, call (416) 736-5183, or email: sprtinfo@yorku.ca . Note: The Yeomen got off to a rousing start, beating University of Toronto 47-1 in the opening game Sept. 11.

  • 54-40 Concert, Sat., Sept. 25, 8 p.m., The Underground, York Student Centre, ($10 for York students/staff/alumni; $12 for Seneca students; $14 at the door) Join one of Canada's hottest bands as they rock the campus with renditions of their classic hits I Go Blind and One Gun, as well as material from their recent album Since When.   • Free Admission to Black Creek Pioneer Village for all York alumni, students, faculty and staff (with York ID) and their families, Sat., Sept. 25 and Sun., Sept. 26, 10 a.m. - 5 p.m., 1000 Murray Ross Pkwy. (at Jane St. and Steeles Ave.). Black Creek Pioneer Village recreates life in 19th-century Ontario showcasing more than 35 buildings, craftspeople in period costumes, bread-making, looming, and blacksmithing demonstrations.   • Jazz it Up! President and Chancellor's 40th Anniversary Reception, Sat., Sept. 25, 11 a.m. - 1 p.m., Winters College Dining Hall. Join York President Dr. Lorna Marsden and Chancellor Avie Bennett for live jazz entertainment, cutting of the 40th Anniversary cake, and refreshments. (Admission is free, all welcome.)

  • Readings by Nino Ricci, Sat., Sept. 25, 5 - 6 p.m., York Bookstore; Daniel Richler, Thurs., Sept. 23, 5:30 - 6:30 p.m. Calumet College, Lounge, Rm. 214. Ricci, who is a York alumnus (BA ė81) and writer-in-residence under the auspices of the Mariano A. Elia Chair in Italian-Canadian Studies at York, will read from his recent novel Where Has She Gone. Richler, the critically acclaimed TV host of CBC Newsworld's Big Life and author of Kicking Tomorrow, will discuss Alternative Grooves and Information. (Admission is free, all welcome.)
