General Information |
|
The Graduate
Programme in Kinesiology & Health Science offers a (minimum) 12-month course work only
Master’s Degree in Coaching (MKine). The degree emphasizes the academic, managerial
and experiential aspects of coaching deemed essential for the preparation of advanced
coaches and includes foundations in the areas of sport sciences, sport specific technical
and practical knowledge and experience, leadership, planning and sport pedagogy. The
various modules required for the Level 4/5 National Coaching Certificate Programme (NCCP)
are included in the required courses. Upon completion, students will be granted the degree
and credits toward Level 4/5 certification of the NCCP. Full Level 4/5 certification could
also be granted in the event all the technical and practical requirements set by the
National Sports Federation (NSF) and the Coaching Association of Canada (CAC) are met by
the time the degree is completed. If these technical and practical requirements are not
completed, full Level 4/5 certification will be granted by the NSF and CAC when they are
completed. Field experiences in the form of a practicum are available for many sports including: football, basketball, tennis, field hockey, ice hockey, volleyball, track and field, and soccer. Other sports may be offered if a suitable Master/Mentor coach is available in the Toronto area. |

Degree Requirements |

Seven half courses, as described
below, and the Research Paper.
A comprehensive review of the advanced theory of training, including strength and periodization, with an emphasis on understanding the specific demands of a sport and the sequencing of training activities in the context of high performance athletic preparation. Professor Bompa KAHS 5730 3.0 Coaching Science II A comprehensive review of advanced information including energy systems, applied sports nutrition, effects of the environment on performance, fatigue, recovery and athlete selection, with an emphasis on applications to high performance sport. Professor Chambers KAHS 5740 3.0 Application of Psychological Skills for Coaches and Athletes The selection and application of mental training skills for optimal performance in training and competition. Problem solving, communications, crisis management and conflict resolution in a sports team. Critique and integration of research in sport psychology applied to practical settings. Professor Wilson KAHS 5750 3.0 Advanced Biomechanical Analysis of Human Movement An examination of human motion with emphasis on the fundamentals of movement description, patterns of motion, mechanics and computer based investigative techniques in biomechanics. Special topics and problems relevant to students’ interests will be covered in seminars and small group laboratory sessions. Professor Duck KAHS 5700 3.0 Special Topics in Coaching A review of a variety of topics, including: long-term development of athletes, age-appropriate activities, ethical issues in high-performance coaching, principles of coaching effectiveness, administration of sports systems at the provincial, national and international level and the use of computer technology in coaching. Professors Robbins and Keir KAHS 5000 0.0 Research Paper An extensive review of the literature with an application to a selected sport. Areas to be covered include: physiology, psychology, biomechanics, technical, tactical, coaching methodology and other areas related to coaching. Evaluation in this course includes an oral examination of the student by a committee of faculty members. Members of the graduate faculty KAHS 5710 3.0 Coaching Seminar Presentations by invited speakers in areas related to elite athletic preparation and performance. Professor Chambers KAHS 5800 6.0 Coaching Practicum Practical coaching experience designed to allow the student to acquire the sport-specific skills, knowledge and competencies needed to provide elite athletes with expert technical and tactical support in training and competition under the guidance of a Master/Mentor coach. Admission Requirements |

To be considered for admission,
an applicant must be a graduate of a recognized university with at least a B+ standing in
the last two years of study or with qualifications accepted as equivalent by the Senate
Committee on Admissions. In addition, applicants must hold an undergraduate degree in
Kinesiology/Physical Education. Students with a degree other than Kinesiology/Physical
Education may be required to complete undergraduate make-up courses. First consideration
will be given to applicants who are certified at NCCP Level 3 in the theoretical,
technical and practical areas. Minimum coaching qualifications for admission are Level 3
theory and Level 2 technical, and a minimum of 2 years coaching experience. Exceptional
candidates, lacking the necessary coaching experience, but who have achieved a high level
of athletic performance (interuniversity, provincial, national, etc.), may be considered.
A Master/Mentor coach must be available for the practicum before final acceptance into the
coaching stream. Where possible, every attempt will be made to interview all applicants.
All application materials and requests should be directed to the Admissions Office, York University. The Graduate Programme in Kinesiology and Health Science considers candidates for admission only after a completed application and accompanying documentation is received. Recommendations for admission of a student to the Programme are made to the Admissions Office. If the recommendation is approved, the candidate is formally notified by the Faculty of Graduate Studies. Applications will only be processed if accompanied by the application fee of $60.00 (subject to change). It is the applicant’s responsibility to inform the Programme of final grades as soon as possible, and must also arrange for transcripts indicating final grades to be forwarded to the Admissions Office. NOTE: Applications to the MKine in Coaching Programme are not being accepted for September 2001. Further information will be available at a later date. Financial Support |
|
Financial aid may be available for coaching from Petro Canada Torch Scholarships (value of $8000), applied through the Canadian Olympic Association in Ottawa, the National Coaching Institute Scholarship (value of $4000), and the Women in Sport Scholarship (value of $2000). Candidates who wish to apply for the latter two scholarships, should mail their requests to Marina van der Merwe, Graduate Programme in Kinesiology and Health Science.
