The Registrar’s Office calculates GPA’s twice a year. TOP Your GPA is calculated at the end of the Fall/Winter term [late May] and at the end of the Summer term [late August]. TOP When the Registrar’s Office calculates your GPA it is compared to the KINE requirement of 5.0. If it is below 5.0 the Registrar will change your major to UNMA [Undeclared Major]. You will be blocked from enrolling in courses if your status is UNMA. You will have to declare a new major if you want to enrol in any courses. TOP You need to complete a form called “Change of Major”. The form can be picked up from the KINE Undergraduate office [333 Bethune College] or online at http://www.registrar.yorku.ca/pdf/major_program_change.pdf Once you have completed the form you must have the form signed by the Department [major] to which you are switching, [not KINE]. The completed form [with signature] must be sent to the Office of the Registrar. Normally, 2 weeks are required to process the Change of Major form. TOP
Yes. KINESIOLOGY is an “Honours only” program. This means that only students with a GPA of at least 5.0 can be in the program. As noted above if you do not have a major then you can not enrol in any courses. TOP Most students who start in the KINE program want to complete the KINE degree. However, since your GPA has fallen below 5,0, you are strongly advised to plan a secondary strategy in case you are unable to achieve the 5.0 requirement in the future. If you are entering 2nd year you could enrol in many of the elective courses that a student is required to complete [see the checklists in the KINE Supplemental Calendar]. If your GPA improves then you will be able to use these electives towards the KINE program in future and complete your degree as planned. Click here for Arts example. Click here for Science example. If you are entering 3rd year then you must seriously plan on completing your degree in another department and take courses that will lead to a degree in your new major. Please see the department of your new major for advising. If you are entering 4th year [completed at least 90 credits] then you have the option of petitioning for a waiver of Honours Standing. To do this you need to submit a petition to the Office of the Registrar requesting this waiver. This waiver allows you to take KINE courses, BUT you must raise your GPA above 5.0 to graduate. TOP
Next year, if your GPA rises to 5.0 or higher then you can submit a Change of Major form and will be admitted back into the KINE program. This only occurs after the registrar calculates the new GPA’s in late May and late August. TOP
KINE courses are reserved for Honours students. You will not be able to enrol in KINE courses using the online web enrolment system. TOP If your GPA becomes 5.0 or higher [calculated in late August], then you can request admission to KINE courses if there is space available. However, keep in mind that it is difficult to raise your GPA substantially by taking 3 or 6 credits of summer school. Your GPA is a weighted average involving all of your York courses. Completing 3 or 6 credits during the summer term will only have a small effect your overall GPA. TOP No. The “Honours only” regulation applies to all KINE students. The only exception to this is if you have completed 90 or more credits. If you have completed 90 or more credits you have the option of petitioning for a waiver of Honours Standing. To do this you need to submit a petition to the Office of the Registrar requesting this waiver. This waiver allows you to take KINE courses, BUT you must raise your GPA above 5.0 to graduate. TOP
