The "VICTORY MEDAL" was developed
in the 1950s by diabetologist Dr. Elliott P.
Joslin, who wanted to acknowledge the accomplishment of managing
insulin-
dependent diabetes over the long term with diet, insulin and regular
exercise.

INSULIN:
Investigations of neuroendocrine factors that influence insulin
secretion and sensitivity in animal models of diabetes mellitus.
EXERCISE:
Studies examining the mechanisms for the protective effects
of
exercise on the development of the metabolic syndrome and how endurance
training influences the hormonal responses to stress.
NUTRITION:
Stable 13C-isotopes are used to examine substrate oxidation during
exercise in healthy children and children with type 1 diabetes mellitus.
Nutritional strategies to improve exercise performance and limit
hypoglycemia
in children are also studied.
